Being dead is hard. Coming back is worse.
Nineteen years after his murder, Baxter Canmore is alive again—mostly functional and absolutely fine. Honest. The nightmares are vicious, his coping skills self-destructive, and someone out there clearly prefers him dead.
Lake Larson has a weakness for damaged men he thinks he can fix. Baxter is the most broken of them all—and he can read Lake’s mind. Literally. Falling for a man who knows every fear, every want, and every secret should be impossible to navigate. Instead, it’s inevitable.
As love blossoms and they search for the truth behind Baxter’s murder, old threats resurface. Someone is watching. Waiting.
Baxter has already died once.
This time, it might stick.
Kill Me Again is the fourth book in H.L. Day’s Paranormal Problems series. This MM romantic suspense features an age gap that isn’t (nineteen years dead complicates things), one MC with a messy relationship with alcohol and strangers, and another who always has a historical anecdote ready. Expect a bed-stealing ex, buried family secrets, a few familiar PPB faces, mind-reading abilities, and a killer lurking in the shadows—identity unknown.
Content warning: brief mention of child abuse (not involving the main characters), on-page replay of a stabbing, attempted murder.
REVIEW:
Nineteen years ago, Baxter was murdered. Now, thanks to the Paranormal Bureau, he’s alive. But someone still wants him dead. Lake’s latest stray has left him with just the walls of his flat and a sofa for comfort. However, a chance meeting has both men finding something the other needed.
Kill Me Again is the fourth book in the Paranormal Problems series, and I couldn’t put it down. From the first page, I was hooked, and I think I broke my record for shedding a tear in a novel. The only thing that beats it is the opening credits for Lassie. Anyhoo, what accompanies the prose is a superb blend of banter, emotion, and investigation. The paranormal aspects aren’t as pronounced in this instalment, as the biggest conundrum is Baxter himself, who first came to my attention in book three.
The story is told in the first person from the viewpoints of Lake and Baxter. As with most books in a series, worldbuilding has evolved. Suffice it to say, the setting is London, England. Baxter is part of the Paranormal Bureau, but given his recent addition to the decade, he has some catching up, and adjusting to do, which isn’t going well. It isn’t until Baxter meets Lake that he has reason to look to his past to help with his future.
As already mentioned, initially, Baxter captured my heart in book three, where he frequently stole the show. In Kill Me Again, he is superb in a different way. He has nineteen years of emotions bottled up, and people around him who mean well, but something is stopping him from confiding in them.
Until Lake.
Lake is a man with a heart of gold who has been taken advantage of. It’s in his DNA to help, and he is just what Baxter needs. He is the perfect calming influence to Baxter’s exuberant emotional turmoil.
What follows is a journey of enlightenment, friendship, love, and drama that had me gripped. I am so glad that I began this series.
