When an incubus tells you he’s your soulmate, do you stay and listen or run and never look back?
I’ve spent most of my life knowing that supernatural creatures exist but never really interacting with any, so my knowledge of them is limited. Still, who would’ve thought a demisexual incubus was a thing?
Well apparently, not only is it a thing, but I have one who claims to be my soulmate—or viramore, as he calls it. And now he has it in his head that he’s going to save me from my past.
I think he might have a few screws loose, but something about him intrigues me, and I find myself drawn into his orbit. Could he be telling the truth? Could he really be my soulmate? Or should I be running from him the way I’m running from my enemies?
REVIEW:
I was so excited to return to the world of the Ellwood’s and to get the opportunity to see much loved characters from the previous two series pop in and say hello. This book is set in the same world but 45 years after the Berserker War. Life has moved on and this book centres on the grandchildren of Ailin and Sebastian, which I thought was wonderful.
Zaos is a shy demi-sexual Incubus, rescued and adopted by Talon and Obi, who is studying to be a nurse and uses his incubus energy to take away pain and help to heal, which comes in handy when in rescues Hugo.
Hugo has escaped from a bad situation upon the death of his sister and is making ends meet working in a bar. He feels like he is being watched but never sees anyone. After being brutally attacked, he is rescued by a mysterious stranger.
I loved both Hugo and Zaos, Hugo was so determined that he couldn’t be Zaos’s viramore, even after he felt the pull to him, his mantra was I’m human this is never going to happen for me. It was his insecurities from his past talking, his fear of being left and abandoned. Zaos didn’t help matters by stalking Hugo for a few weeks before the attack.
Zaos knows that Hugo is his one and only, viramore, the supernatural equivalent of a soulmate but convincing Hugo of this is an uphill battle. I really liked the restraint that Zaos shows, his patience with Hugo and the small things he does to show that he cares deeply.
It was great to see Hugo getting introduced to the supernatural world with all its many wonders and magical creatures, most of whom are related to Zaos. Hugo was so cute with all the changes he is faced with and whilst he got shocks and is scared, he also handles it with humour and grace.
The little cameo’s where Ailin and Sebastian show up are fantastic, Ailin is still the grumpy ass from the Ellwood Chronicles series and Seb is still trying to rein in Ailin’s temper. Ailin might be grumpy, but he loves his grandchildren enormously and will do anything to keep them safe.
This is a very sweet romance, with a bit of action, it deals with the bonds between soul mates and the dynamics of family.
