It only took seconds for my world to change…
I live a simple, small-town life. Helping with the family restaurant, my side gig as a ride-share driver, hanging with my best friend, making the most of the extra time with my ghost grandma. The only exciting thing to happen to me in the past year was when Gabe moved to town—too bad Nonna scared him off. It’s hard to impress a guy when your dead grandmother calls him the devil.
The last thing I expect when I pick up a ride-share client and take him to Mannix Estate is that he’s a demon. An actual, breathing, can-kill-me-with-a-thought demon. That night blows my simple life apart and changes everything. Turns out, ghosts aren’t the weirdest things out there, my best friend and Gabe are both part of this alternate world, and there’s a big bad demon who wants to end us all. What’s a small-town boy to do but roll up his sleeves and join the fight to save the world?
Working side by side with Gabe reminds me just how much I liked him when we first met… and the feelings mutual. As the clock counts down and we both struggle with personal issues, it’s good to know there’s someone to lean on. But I don’t know if our tenuous connection can survive the hell that’s coming and see us through to the other side.
REVIEW:
I really love this series, it’s a great new universe for Louisa’s mind to plot fascinating stories. My usual disclaimer, when reviewing a series. You must read the previous books in this series, or you will seriously not have a clue what is going on. What I appreciate about Louisa is that none of her books are formulaic and never cover the same theme or territory when she’s building a series. The world building gets more interesting and vivid as this series progresses. This time around we get to see glimpses into the “otherworld”, where demons and spirits, etc. live.
Which leads me into her characters. The depth of the characters is so well fleshed out, you can feel it coming off the pages. When Maisie is on the prowl or Tom’s Nonna is reading the riot act to Gabe, when they first meet. You can just see and feel the vibes coming your way. It’s one of those books and series, that you wish you could step into the pages and be a fly on the wall to experience just a little bit of intense action. I mean who doesn’t want to interact with ghosts and demons.
Skye looks at Connor and Gabe. Connor’s jaw is clenched, but he nods. Marc seems to take that as a sign.
“If I meant to harm you, I would have started with her. Yes, many of my brethren treat you humans as disposable, but I never have.”
“You nearly killed me!” Connor yells. “But not just for the fun of it.”
I blink a few times. Did he just say…?
The sexy times between Gabe and Tom are smokin hot. So much so that a ghost or two, might be a bit voyeuristic. I highly recommend this book. It is a great addition to this series, and you should hurry to purchase this book. There is a tantalizing bit later in the book that hints at a possible future relationship, that I can’t wait to see play out. I will patiently await the next book in this series. Keep the salt handy, it’s getting hot at the Mannix Estate and the ghosts are getting curious.
