When the current captain of Boston’s cold case unit comes knocking on Ronan O’Mara’s door, he brings with him an unsolved homicide file and Ronan’s old police badge. Ronan is intrigued to say the least. The case is the twenty-year-old murder of a high school math teacher. It’s the one investigation Ronan’s partner Kevin Fitzgibbon could never solve during his time on the police force.
Psychic Tennyson Grimm is happy to have his husband’s days of wearing a badge behind him, but now Ronan wants back in, begging to solve one last case. While Ronan reminisces about their good old days working cold cases for the Boston Police Department, all Tennyson can remember are the times he and Ronan were shot, stabbed, and kidnapped. Never able to deny his husband anything, Ten relents and agrees to join the hunt for the killer, who’s had two decades to cover their tracks.
As new leads and old secrets come to light, the finger of suspicion points in only one direction, but when Ronan and Fitzgibbon show up to make an arrest, their suspect has vanished.
When the killer steps out of the shadows to take another victim will Fitzgibbon get there in time to stop another murder? Or will this case leave Tennyson and Ronan dead cold?
REVIEW:
Disclaimer – if you have not read any of this series, you will need to start from the beginning as all these books build on this one and the spin off series Haunted Souls. I always love when the gang returns to their cold case roots. Of all the characters Pandora has written over the years, Tennyson and Ronan are my favorite. What makes them my favorite and keeps me coming back for more of them, is when I read these guys – it feels like coming home. Coming home to your favorite blanket and wrapping up in it, in front of the fireplace and being all warm and cozy. I then get to immerse myself in a highly relatable group of characters, that are not perfect and frequently show their flaws. I am always impressed with the high level of creativity she brings to not only the extensive world building at this point, but also her characters and the underlying mystery plot. Pandora always comes up with some serious gems, that just make me laugh out loud when I’m reading her books. Context for the quote below, which has nothing to do with the mystery plot, is a woman has come in for a reading with Tennyson and it doesn’t go well.
That was the understatement of the century, considering the dead sister just told
Ten that both of her kids were fathered by her sister’s dead husband. Some days you were the windshield. Some days the bug.
How do you not relate that to real life. I know I do. This book was a serious page turner for me, and I read it in one sitting. The interplay between Ten, Ronan, and the Scooby gang just gets better with each new book. She creates even more depth to each character, which honestly, I don’t know how she does that after 21 books in this series.
The cold case plot in this story is so well planned out. I will admit I had my suspicions around the 2/3 of the story mark, as to the identity of the murderer, but had to wait until the end of the book to see if I was correct. Sorry, I’m not going to tell you if I was right or wrong. You need to grab this one and find out for yourself. I highly recommend not only this book, but the entire series. Once you read them, you will be just as hooked on them as I am. Cannot wait for the next books to come out.
