A Thousand Vermilion Stars by Patricia Logan
FBI Files, Book 3
A copycat serial killer is driving their whole team crazy.
Dr. Leo Reeves has always considered himself a halfway decent criminal profiler. Some of his colleagues even call him brilliant. With this assignment, he sure as hell doesn’t feel that way. He’s been missing something at every turn. The case is dragging into its seventh month and every lead he and his team follow, takes them to a dead end…literally. Leo sure hasn’t come up with anything to move things along, as hard as he’s tried. They’re no closer to capturing their killer…even after following him all the way to Miami.
Special Agent Max Prince is worried.
The longer this case goes on, the farther down the rabbit hole, his partner and lover, Leo, seems to fall. To make matters worse, back home in Los Angeles, detectives Cassidy Ryan and Mike Williams have turned up a second graveyard filled with some surprising victims…victims the team know well. Worse yet, Miami has left them with even more questions. When a good cop is murdered, the whole case turns on its head. Everyone wants answers and their team doesn’t have any.
Something has to change.
Worst of all, the copycat hasn’t stopped killing, leaving strange clues behind, even inserting himself into the case. When one of their own is put in horrible danger, and DNA results reveal a shocking truth, things get even more complicated. No one likes taking risks, especially when they involve meeting the killer on his terms. But taking that risk, might be the only way to resolve this case. Whether it’s the desert graveyards of SoCal, the sexy hot nights of South Beach’s gay scene, or the sticky bayous of New Orleans, Max and Leo have vowed to end this monster once and for all…if he doesn’t end them first.

“All right, I want you to close your eyes. Take some nice deep breaths, in and out. Just feeling yourself unwinding, letting yourself sink into your chair. That’s right. Feeling your shoulders drop, letting go. Your breathing is going even deeper, slowing down, letting yourself become more and more relaxed. That’s right.
“And I want to start off by taking you back in time to when you were a little boy, and your father was talking to you. It was when he said, ‘tally-ho’ to you. Where were you the last time he said it to you?”
Leo thought back, when his father’s face suddenly swam before him, and he gritted his teeth. “I’m at home but Daddy is putting me in the car.”
“Is it just the two of you?”
“Yes, Mommy is in the doorway. She looks sad but she doesn’t say anything.”
“He said ‘tally-ho’ to you then?”
“Yes.”
“What did that mean to you?”
“He was telling me to hurry up. He had work to do. He said, ‘Tally-ho, Leo. We’re off.’ And then we left.”
“Good, Leo, now tell me where you are,” Watterson said softly.
“I’m in a car.”
“Is your father driving?”
“Yes.”
“Who’s in the car with you?”
“Just my father.”
“How old are you?”
“I’m five.”
“You’re a little guy. Okay. Leo, tell me what the air smells like.”
Leo wrinkled his nose. “Cigarettes.”
“Cigarette smoke?”
“Yes. I don’t like it.”
“Your father smoked cigarettes?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, Leo, what can you hear?”
“The radio is on.”
“Is music playing?”
“No. It’s the news. Whenever my father took me places, he listened to the news.”
“Can you identify any stations or the announcer?”
“No, I’m too little.”
“Okay, now, I want you to concentrate very hard, Leo. Look out the window of the car. Is it night or day?”
“Night.”
“Okay, can you see any road signs?”
“Yes. There’s one that says Lake Pontchartrain, ten miles.” Leo had no idea how he could read that. He wasn’t reading long words like that at five. He wondered if he’d been older. “Wait…I might be older.”
“Older than five?”
“Yes, how can I read that word at five?”
“Is the sign a picture in your mind or did you read the word, Leo?”
Oh, there it is. “It’s a picture. A flash of memory. That’s all.”
