REVIEW:
I’ve been looking forward to Grizzly’s story for what feels like forever, and I wasn’t disappointed. I really enjoy books about older boys. I don’t mind if their Daddies are older or younger — and in this case, the Daddy is a lot younger.
Paxton Wells knows exactly what he wants in life: to graduate from college, to play baseball for the Bellport Blue Jays, to have Grizzly Thorson as his agent and, if he’s really, really lucky, maybe Grizzly as his Little.
Grizzly Thorson is good at what he does — not that he believes he’s good at anything, thanks to the voices of his parents who belittled him all his life. He knows he has a good team working for him: Moseley, his intern, and Cheyenne, his assistant, and he knows they care for him. That’s all well and good, and he knows it has to be enough, because he’s never hoping to find a Daddy of his own. He’s too big, muscular, hairy and old to be anyone’s Little Boy.
This book is well written and contains some serious topics, including verbal parental abuse and macular degeneration — a condition that causes deterioration of the central vision. These are handled in a sympathetic and thoughtful way.
Paxton is part of the Princess Pack (AKA Princess Aster’s friend group). Although definitely a Daddy and not a Little, he’s good friends with them, and his best friend is a Little called Doyle, whom we originally met in XOXO (Doyle’s book, number three in the Princess Pen Pals series). They cannot let Paxton move to a new town without arranging a connection with the Daddies there, and when he gets an invite to a Daddy/Little party at the Bellports’ house, he’s amazed to find Grizzly is there. Is this fate?
One of the things A.W. Scott does a lot is cross characters between different series, and I love it. It means I get to continue seeing what’s happening in their lives, and I don’t have to give them up when their specific series ends. I don’t think any of them play a big enough part in this book for not knowing their backstories to be an issue if you haven’t read her prior books.
This series was originally meant to be a duology, but it looks like it has increased to a three‑book series, which makes me very happy. I’m really looking forward to Pete’s book next.
