Kof has never questioned his place in the Red Hand clan. As captain of the shaman’s honor guard, his life belongs to duty. Protect the shaman, uphold tradition, and keep watch over the caves as winter tightens its grip. But duty becomes harder to obey when the Lost Clan appears at the village gate.
Orcish tradition says the Lost Clan must be welcomed as kin. Yet the prisoner they bring with them is clearly no orc. Eli’s tattoos tell an unreadable story, his haunting blue eyes offer no answers, and his scent stirs a memory Kof can’t quite place.
Then the weather turns.
Eli predicts the storm before the shaman does, and as hunger creeps through the caves, fear turns swiftly to accusation. To the clan, Eli’s impossible knowledge is proof of danger. To Kof, it becomes something far more troubling—proof that the human may be telling the truth.
Kof knows he should stand with the shaman. He should silence doubt, defend tradition, and let the clan decide Eli’s fate. Instead, he finds himself watching Eli too closely, listening too carefully, and wanting what no loyal honor guard should want.
As the witch hunt gathers force, Kof must choose between the duty that has defined his life and the man who may be the clan’s only chance of surviving the storm.
The final book in the Red Hand trilogy brings together clan politics, ancient prophecy, survival stakes, and a slow-burn MM romance between the shaman’s loyal guard and the mysterious human who threatens everything he was sworn to protect.
MM orc romance, Duty-bound protector/Captive human, Opposites attract, Loyalty tested, Witch hunt, Slow burn, medium heat, Trilogy finale
REVIEW:
Once again, I’m impressed by this author’s storytelling in this genre that isn’t necessarily my first choice. She’s built a fully realized world with interesting characters and so many plot twists! The humans here are not just playthings for the orcs. They have a large part in fulfilling prophesy and understanding things that maybe the Orcs don’t necessarily see.
Kof has lived his life in the clan according to certain precepts – and that is largely serving as guard to the shaman. This new shaman has been a surprise in so many ways, but Kof has accepted his duties to Droko, despite his oddities and his relationship with Archie (also a prophecy fulfilled). When the Lost Clan shows up, Kof does his duty and they are stuck with this group until the next moon. What he does not expect is Eli, the mysterious tattooed human with the haunting blue eyes. There is more to this human captive than his surface beauty.
The Red Hand leaders are not thrilled about the Lost Clan showing up, but it is there duty to treat them as clansmen until their time is up. With winter approaching and provisions getting harder to come up, but this is even more unwelcome. Eli is not like the humans that already reside with the Red Hand clan and Kof can’t figure out the pull/recognition he seems to feel for this odd slave. Also nobody trusts this clan and they don’t know what Eli’s part is in whatever they are up to.
When it becomes clear that Eli is no ordinary human and things get a bit sketchy, Kof is determined to do his duty. Eli wants his freedom and Kof tries to give it to him. But there are still difficulties ahead with the Lost Clan and their motivations.
Thoroughly enjoyed this conclusion to this trilogy. The orcs are interesting and the intrigue in this one added another layer of complexity to this orc civilization. There are surprises and villains aplenty and the twists and turns that reveal the paths of Kof and Eli kept my interest through the book. I would have like more of Marok and Quinn, but they are more peripheral to this story, so it’s understandable. I did really enjoy getting to see Archie and Droko in this episode. Kof’s relationship with them is entertaining :). Eli and Kof’s history was intriguing and I was completely entertained until the end. The conclusion was satisfying and I am a little sad these orc stories are over. I definitely recommend this very interesting series.
