A Soul Forged in Shadow, A Heart Found in the Light

For years, Apollo was nothing more than a number. A perfect weapon crafted in the cold, sterile labs of the Noah Group. He knew only the grey of concrete walls and the sting of betrayal until the day he finally escaped his chains and claimed his freedom.

But even though he broke free from the group’s stranglehold, he couldn’t deny the isolation of being a “mutant” in a world that feared him. Now he’s a leader with a fearsome burden on his shoulders.

Then Rocko comes calling.

A weary detective who’d walked away from everything, Rocko wasn’t looking for a hero. And he certainly wasn’t looking for a man who could sense the hum of the world around him. But in Apollo’s guarded eyes, Rocko sees a soul worth protecting.

And in Rocko’s steady presence, Apollo finds the one thing the Noah Group could never manufacture: a reason to hope.

As they lead a band of survivors against the shadowy organization that still hunts them, the battle becomes personal. In the quiet moments between the gunfire and the narrow escapes, a bond forms that is more powerful than any genetic enhancement.

Apollo has spent his life fighting to survive. Now, with Rocko by his side, he’s finally learning what it means to live.

REVIEW:

As a favor to a friend, Apollo invites Rocko to his sanctuary. What neither expected was for the other to quell their internal warring dilemmas. What a blessing internal peace could be. However, with a mission to provide passage to safety for survivors of the Noah project, something dangerous soon ends up on their doorstep.

Apollo is the first book in The Noah Project series, which is a spin-off of the popular Fire Lake series. It has many parallels with the Fire Lake boys in that Apollo’s band of survivors were created by the Noah Group, in a bid to make mutant warriors, with no regard for the people being experimented on. A spin-off is not a bad thing, as it gives a different set of characters, viewpoints and missions. And, if you loved Brick and his Fire Lake boys, then you will enjoy this too.

The story is written in the third person from the viewpoints of Apollo and Rocko. This first instalment sets the scene and introduces the main characters, while providing a love story for its leader. It also gives the initial vibe/dynamics of the team, and their determination to help others while keeping their compound a sanctuary.

Apollo first appears in the Fire Lake series. He was such a good character that he deserved his own books. Apollo is a huge man with a -some yet to be revealed – range of abilities that he uses to lead and protect his people. At any one time, he has a multitude of things to process. Rocko is a detective from Florida with talents that help him be one hell of a cop. Among other things, he never forgets anything he sees. To tell you any more would give much of the game away, so I will now stay schtum.

As the story progresses, we get a taste of the group’s gifts and some of the possible amazing action to come. The outlook is good. My only concern is this series becoming a repeat of the Fire Lake series with merely a different location.
