REVIEW:

Note:  This is the fourth in the series and it is required to read this series in order.

Cael is a broken man.  Without his magic, he can never be a Vitalian – a true magic healer.  He looks and looks and looks for answers, for help, for assurance that he will one day be back to his old self.   But there are no answers.  Well none that he wants.  He sinks further into depression as he’s staying with Nicostratus who vows to take care of him.  Just when he’s about to give up entirely, you just know he’s going to be stopped and you know who is the only one who can stop him.

Nicostratus is not happy when Cael is removed from his care.  Quin and Cael have a very hard road ahead of them though.  A mass poisoning of refugees that are being blamed on the runaway king is causing more problems.  Nicostratus is being held on suspicion of killing some redcloaks.  How is this all tied together?  And how can Quin and Cael figure this out and save the day?

Beneath all of this, there is a distance between the brothers.  And there is impending clashes at the borders.  With so many hidden identities, subterfuge and worry about who is truly loyal to the king, there is a lot of action.

This book surprised me in a lot of ways.  Quin who has always looked out for his brother is torn about Cael’s self-destructive depression and seeming bent on giving up.  But when he and Cale work together, Nico is devastated and things get dicey.  There is a lot of disguise and intrigue in this town as well.  It’s sometimes hard to remember all the players.  Each book has a whole new cast of characters in each town the princes and Cael end up in and I’ll be honest, I’m starting get names confused.  It’s like a need a scorecard.  I’m intrigued to see what happens next.  I have the ominous feeling that things are going to get worse before they get better.  I can’t see how everyone is going to end up happy in this series.  Must forge ahead!  Recommened for fans of fantasy especially.
