Ranjit Blake, captain of the guard, protects his people by killing whoever threatens them. Even if the danger is Prince Sheruke, a half-human earth elemental. Sheruke can’t be harmed when he becomes a landslide or a lava flow, but Ranj tricks him into taking his human form. And at point-blank range, Ranj shoots him in the head.
Ranj immediately wishes he’d saved the bullet for himself, because Sheruke has a secret—he’s invulnerable in either form. That leaves Ranj no choice but to surrender and offer to serve Sheruke. In any capacity he desires.
Sheruke may have stone eyes and disfiguring scars, but his power and charisma make up for those—and there’s never been a human he couldn’t tame. Not even Ranj. But as the reckless gunslinger gives in to temptation, Sheruke wants even more of him. And the danger level is off the charts. Because if Ranj ever discovers Sheruke’s other secret, the one which could destroy even a Prince, Ranj will have to choose between the safety of his people and the life of the Prince who has fallen for him.
REVIEW:
I started this one and couldn’t get into it. I tried again a few weeks later and thankfully I got into the story because it was really a nice, interesting, and intriguing read.
This is the second book of the series. While I understood the situation, I had the feeling I missed out.
As in where Sheruke came from, and why he was here. The author created a world that is in my experience, settled as a fantasy story with a historical touch, with cobblestone roads, fur cloaks, horse transport, Council-speakers, half-humans, and realms.
Sheruke, the Prince and patron of the city of New Canton, is somewhat amused with Ranjit.
After Ranjit, captain of the guard, shot him, defending his friends’ honor, Prince Sheruke seemed dead, but no, half-human earth elementals can’t be shot and killed. As repentance Ranjit has to serve Prince Sheruke, be obedient and subservient, and Ranjit is both not. So yeah, Sheruke is amused by this obstinate human, who’s got a lot of courage, and who doesn’t shy away to tell Sheruke exactly what he thinks of him.
While Sheruke would love some intimacy with Ranjit, his servant is prickly, and hostile, and keeps his distance. There has to be a way to Ranjit’s heart.
Sheruke wants to be a good patron for New Canton and doesn’t understand where it went wrong.
Because of their close proximity, Ranjit notices strange things and changes about Sheruke.
There are holes in his memory and speaks distracted at times.
Yes, there’s definitely something going on with Sheruke. Maybe it runs in the family? Well, there’s a story!
It was a widely and steadily written story, it was dragging a bit on the relationship part. There was tension, but mildly expressed and, for me, not enough developed. The surroundings on the other hand were extendedly described. The fantasy parts were excellently done. About the characters, I loved Sheruke more than Ranjit, the first one was big, gentle, and calm, and Ranjit was suspicious and haughty. What I missed was an emotional connection and feelings on a deeper level, I couldn’t feel it, it was a bit aloof.
The whole story together was attractive, there was so much to see, the places where it lacked excitement I scrolled a bit through the pages.
Overall an entertaining story with an epic end.
