There’s only one person I trust…
It’s no secret that I’m hard to handle. People get annoyed by me. Sometimes they’re amused, but not for long. It’s not easy to deal with a paranoid conspiracy theorist, and I stretch everyone’s patience.
Everyone except Wil. He was there at the beginning, when I was rescued from my old life, and he’s stuck with me since. He’s been my friend when no one else wanted to. Patiently taught me how to fit in. He’s the one person I know I can rely on. He’s the only man I can see myself ever being with. The only man I would want to spend eternity with.
But when my past rears its ugly head and the stuff of my nightmares rises from the dead, the hope of a happy future rapidly fades. I need him more than ever, but I can’t risk him. I can’t let anyone use him against me.
Torture doesn’t have to be physical to hurt. And I’m not going to let myself be hurt again.
REVIEW:
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. Stef has always been a character in the background of the other books in this series. He has been someone that exasperates people and is viewed by many as that nutcase conspiracy theorist, totally over the top in preparing for and seeing the worst in every situation.
I was delighted by this book, it was so unexpected but a total joy and I loved getting to know the person behind the outward persona of Stef, his backstory and his struggles.
Stef is so much more than he shows to the world and his actions and suspicions are finally shown to be necessary and in fact, save the day. Stef has a very peculiar way of looking at the world and his brain is extraordinary but can analyse itself to death.
It was unexpected that Stef already had his mate, there had been no hint in previous books that Stef had anyone in his life and I was expecting that he would meet his mate in some form or another. Wil is one of the guards and was there when Stef was originally found, they formed a strong friendship that morphed into lovers and unbelievably had been together for a 1,000 years long before they all came to Earth. It was one of Stef’s most closely guarded secrets as he was so afraid that Wil would become a target if anyone found out about them.
There is many funny instances where Stef’s family at Here Be Dragons try to set up Stef and Wil with different prospects to date. It was apparent how much Stef is loved and adored by his family and the lengths they go to, to make sure that he is kept on an even keel and grounded. Wil is amazing, so loving and supportive and agreeing to keep such an important relationship secret. He will do anything for Stef and is the mainstay in Stef’s life, I felt for Wil and the strain he felt keeping it secret and how much he loves and adores Stef, how he saw a totally different side to Stef than anyone else saw.
It was so interesting to find out Stef’s background and how much he had endured, which explained perfectly why he is the way he is.
There was so many unexpected twists and turns in this book and I particularly liked that the biggest twist, didn’t result in the expected outcome, in fact it was furthest from jumping with joy and wanting to establish a relationship and that was refreshing. That felt so real, something I thought I would feel after everything that had happened.
It was also interesting that we gained a bit more of an insight into Brandt’s role as species leader, I thought I knew from his book but the description of knowing all the dragons and their connection was explained in more detail in this book.
I really loved this book, it was a joy to read, some bits were hard and made me cry but I went from little understanding of a character to being totally on Team Stef, because he is awesome.
