There isn’t a monster D’Angelo Kumar can’t destroy or a crisis he can’t manage until he meets Angel Bai. The insane attraction he feels toward the sexy waiter is unwelcome because D’Angelo doesn’t have room in his life for relationships. A solitary path is the only option for a man like him, but fighting his growing feelings for Angel may be the first battle he can’t win.
Angel’s abilities extend beyond memorizing the menu at D’Angelo’s favorite Italian restaurant, but he knows better than to trust anyone with his secret. When a vision reveals that D’Angelo’s life is in danger, he will risk everything to save him. The only thing scarier than monsters and demons to Angel is never knowing D’Angelo’s touch.
To say the demon hunter is reluctant to form a partnership with the psychic is putting it mildly, but D’Angelo needs every advantage he can get when the world’s very existence is threatened. As darkness looms nearer, D’Angelo and Angel’s unexplainable connection grows stronger. For a chance at happiness, the two men will need to call upon unlikely allies for an epic showdown between good and evil.
REVIEW:
I found this series through an announcement post on Love Bytes. It sounded intriguing, so I popped over to Amazon and one clicked this first book on KU. I rapidly worked my way through this one and the follow-up book two and I’ve got to say I loved them both. As I was preparing to write this review I popped over to that awful GR site to check page totals and get the book cover photo and was really surprised to see some of the reviews posted there. Obviously, those people didn’t read the books I just read.
In Circle of Darkness, the authors introduce us to a hidden world within our own. Their take on it has us focusing on a man named D’Angelo Kumar, who along with his business partner, Christian Wolfe, left a shadowy organization somewhat resembling the Catholic Church in my mind, but one focused on controlling the balance between humans and the supernatural. When that organization found out the two men were gay, they were thrown out. After being tossed out they started their own organization and now it is the two of them, plus two women who they collected along the way. There is a lot of backstory told in a short period of time through info dumps, but for me it worked to give me enough to build on. I did kind of wonder in a couple spots if I was supposed to have read another series which this one may have jumped off from, but I’m not sure. For example, there were mentions of a priest which kind of came out of nowhere, but if I was supposed to have read something previously… I didn’t, and I easily slid into this story.
Angel Bai is a waiter at an upscale Italian eatery in Chicago. The sexiest man he has ever seen comes in regularly and always sits in Angel’s section. One night their hands brush and it is like lightning. But the man goes back to studiously ignoring Angel on his subsequent visits. There is something the man doesn’t know though. Angel is a psychic and he has foreseen D’Angelo being killed. Angel must warn D’Angelo, who of course doesn’t believe him.
The story builds quickly, and I enjoyed the hunt and all it entailed, and I also enjoyed the two men getting to know each other. I liked the world building and I liked the way the authors brought a bunch of different supernatural species into play.
I highly recommend this one, and the next one in the series which I’ll be reviewing separately. If you like supernatural books, give this series a try. I don’t believe you’ll be disappointed.
