SERIES: Welcome to Alvarado #1
AUTHOR: C.E. Kilgore
PUBLISHER: Self Pub
LENGTH: 186 Pages
BLURB:
Sam’s ended up right back where he started – the small Texas town he swore he’d never step foot in again after making fast tracks to SMU. He’s not the young, gay kid he was when he left. He has a music degree now, with no job and is about to lose his dorm room… Shit.
When an old friend has him coming back to where he started, Sam struggles to deal with old memories and an unexpected reality. Things in Alvarado aren’t exactly how he remembers them, and neither is his arch nemesis Cody Greene.
When the two men get stuck together by a promise, the hated memories that Sam’s bitterly held onto for five years begin to unravel. When the dust settles, Sam and Cody have to decide if they can let go of the past to build a future.
REVIEW:
“This is our music, Cody and I; our song. Our love. And it’s absolutely beautiful.”
Overall, this was a really sweet reunited friends to lover’s story. What really kept me interested in the story was the two main characters connection to Mrs. Greene. That was hands down my favorite thing about this story. The love they both felt for this woman who loved them both unconditionally and ultimately brought them together was magnificent. I’ve never read anything by C.E. Kilgore before but I truly enjoyed this authors writing style.
I did have an issue with the story, however. The “instalove,” “I’ve loved you my whole life I just didn’t know” thing wasn’t really believable, in my opinion. I did think these two had an undeniable attraction to each other and the passion after a bit was pretty hot but the mushy gushy love stuff that came so quickly, almost seemed forced.
Sam and Cody have known each other basically their whole lives. Sam was the “band nerd” who loved music above all else. Cody was the quintessential “jock” and made sure he lived up to the stigma. Together quite a bit due to Sam’s music lessons with Mrs. Greene, Cody’s mom, they learn to tolerate one another. But Cody never shy’s away from poking at Sam whenever he gets the chance.
Tragic events force Sam to leave his small town and go to college 3 hours away. Sam grows up and tries to put Alvarado behind him. He does maintain constant contact with Mrs. Greene however. After he graduates Mrs. Greene asks him to come and visit and since she is like a mother to Sam he honors her request.
It’s a little predictable as the story progresses with some small surprises here and there, including a rather large twist.
Like I said, I did enjoy this book. A promising start to a series and I recommend to anyone who loves reunited friends to lovers type stories. I’m definitely looking forward to Ricky’s story.
