One heart’s been broken. The other is secondhand.
Kory Vansant doesn’t deserve to be alive.
As time sucks him dry of energy, sapping the final ounces of strength from his congenitally enlarged heart, he’s forced to end his career as Kory Kent, porn star. Staring down death, he questions his life choices and prays for a miracle. For another chance at life, he vows to change who he is at his core.
His prayers are answered. A perfect heart now beats in his chest, but it comes at a heavy price. The donor is an innocent young man cut down far too prematurely.
Kory’s blemished history and his donor’s spotless past are far from ideal matches.
As his debts skyrocket, Kory can’t help but think his resolve to walk the high road is being tested. After he meets the adorable Will Squire at the gravesite they both visit, he’s doubly damned because there’s no way he can keep up his end of the bargain. What happens when a man breaks a deal with a higher power?
Will often prefers the company of the dead to that of the living. Following a bad breakup, he pours himself into his two jobs—funeral director at his uncle’s mortuary and part-time paramedic. He’s drawn ever closer to Kory, as if fate sticks her fickle hand in and pushes them together like two unlikely puzzle pieces. But sometimes history can’t be buried, and maybe divine intervention isn’t always right. Will discovers everyone is imperfect, no matter how pretty the outer package, and opening one’s heart is never easy, but can be oh, so worth the pain.

How did you come up with the plot for Crossed Hearts?
It started with a general interest in organ transplant and how it affects everyone involved, and then sort of grew from there. My dad was a funeral director for a short time before I was born (working for his cheap uncle) and told us kids a couple of wild stories from his brief stint in the mortuary business. Some of those tales inspired Will’s career.
I have a healthy obsession with porn and often wonder what types of people get into that business. Do they have other jobs and hide their secret porn identity? Do they have a hard time getting out of the business and going “legit” if they want to (my research points to yes)? Do they have normal, loving relationships outside their profession? Are they ever conflicted about what they do for a living? I thought it’d be interesting to play with those questions in writing Kory.
I see this is the first book in a series, what do you have planned for the next book?
The next two books in the series will be about characters from Crossed Hearts. Book two will be Mando and his boyfriend Jake’s story. They’re friends of Kory’s from his porn-working days. In Crossed Hearts it appears they have their relationship (mostly) perfected, but that’s not necessarily the case. Book three is for Matt. I won’t say who he is in Crossed Hearts, but the fact that he needs a happily ever after is apparent.
What authors inspire you?
Lots of them, in many genres. In MM particularly, authors who have done the self-publishing thing well—Josh Lanyon, Keira Andrews, and Anyta Sunday just to name the first few to pop into my head—inspired me to give self-pubbing a try, and to put out the most professional product I can. It’s a tremendous amount of work and makes me appreciate the authors who do it all the more.
Alexis Hall inspires me with his gorgeous prose, and KJ Charles with her spot-on storytelling and progression to the big leagues.
How long have you been writing?
The usual “since I was a kid” applies. I kept copious angst-filled journals in high-school and attempted the start of a few stories in college and after, with the intention of someday writing Harlequin romances. I never finished those stories, and a number of years later—after my third child was born—I decided to start working on my writing goals in earnest, particularly since I was staying home with my kids and wouldn’t get a better opportunity once I went back to work. In 2011 I began writing for publication and started out penning horror and bizarro shorts, followed by erotica for anthologies and online pubs.
What are your writing plans for 2015?
I feel like I haven’t gotten much done in the past six months, so I’d love to buckle down and finish writing the novella I’m working on (3.5 in my Shooting Stars series) and then start on book 4. In a perfect world, I’d finish those and the second in my Hearts and Scars series before the end of the year. I’m really excited to write all of them, so hopefully I can make that happen.
Thanks so much for hosting me! 🙂
The man scratched the scrub on his chin. “Heart recipient,” he said finally. “I’m Kory—umm…Kory Vansant.” Holding out his hand, he took another step. Will’s fingers were swallowed in warm skin and bone.
“Will Squire.” Again, he couldn’t tear his gaze from the tease of scar tissue jutting from the crotch of Kory’s shirt collar. The urge to reach out and trace a finger over the pink relief of healed tissue was strong. Just like I touched Brandon’s incision. The stark difference between the two—one wound marking the end of a life and the other a salvation—was surreal. Will was nothing but an outsider looking in on a miracle, but somehow he felt he’d come around full circle.
“Want me to get naked so you can see the whole thing?”
Will closed his eyes for a moment and then looked up, his face flaming with a mix of embarrassment and immediate, fierce arousal. “I’m sorry. Totally rude.”
Kory smiled good-naturedly. “No worries. It’s a way to reclaim who I am, or was. Or some crap. I’m not just my medical status, like they keep saying at my support group.”
“No. Of course you’re not.”
He laughed loud and deep, and the warmth in Will’s face drifted down his body. “I’ve adopted it as my little icebreaker whenever people stare,” Kory said.
“Well, ice broken.” Will gulped. Hell, ice melted into a rolling boil.
