Escaping an abusive relationship left Luke Preston anxious and spouting panic-induced poetry. Desperate for a fresh start, Luke accepts a job remodeling a tired old beach house for a professional soccer player and his model girlfriend. While his passion is literature, not sports, focusing on the renovations eases his anxiety. Until the job he signed up for turns out to be more complicated than advertised.
Sidelined with a serious injury, soccer star Michael Martinez decides his beach house is the perfect place to recuperate. Remodeling might be the diversion he needs to keep his mind off his busted knee. Falling for the pretty designer with some quirky habits wasn’t on the drawing board. Unfortunately, Luke didn’t build a big enough closet for Michael to hide in. Having a star-powered sports career used to be all Michael lived for, but he’ll have to reevaluate his plans and find the right words if he wants to build more than a beach house with Luke.
REVIEW:
“….you’re my….my truth. My reason for getting up in the morning. My reason to push myself to be stronger, to get stronger, to be something more than I am….”
I love Lane Hayes books. I really do. This author has a gift when it comes to the written word. She gives us these rich full characters imbedded in these places that seem not real but are….she makes them magical. I want to go and see the ocean so badly, having read this book. With all that said, I didn’t love this book but I didn’t hate it either. It was good, I liked it a lot and would recommend it but that’s sad for me because I really, really wanted to love it.
It was sweet, so sweet and had these, “Awwwww” moments that were pretty wonderful.
Luke is just recently out of an abusive relationship and is starting over. He’s staying with his friend Brandon and working at his home goods store. Luke is an interior designer and having been derailed by this sudden break up, he’s trying to start his business up again. Brandon sets up a meeting for Luke with a “mystery” client and her fiancée a famous soccer player who was recently injured. When Luke arrives at the house things don’t go as planned because it looks as though the soccer player broke things off with his cheating ex-lover and is not interested in a remodel. But Luke works his magic and the soccer player agrees to a remodel.
Michael is broken, literally and figuratively. He tore his ACL, can’t play soccer and threw his cheating lover out. When he sees Luke you can immediately tell there is an attraction but Luke is under the assumption that Michael’s ex is a woman and that Michael is straight.
After an irate confrontation with Michael’s ex, Luke discovers that Michael is in fact, gay and his ex is indeed a man.
I think I couldn’t fall in love with this story because of Luke. He drove me crazy from beginning to end. He’s very whiny, self righteous, and bratty. I wanted to think that he was only this way because of his past experiences but I had a hard time feeling a connection to him or even liking him, so that threw me. His lack of patience and understanding for Michael’s situation upset and frustrated me.
Michael, however, I just loved. What a great character. He was funny, understanding, patient…he was trapped but never really lashed out or expected pity. He just tried to make his situation as bearable as possible.
There are some twists and turns, a bit of angst(wish there was more), meddling family and friends, a crazy blackmailing ex, all centered around these two people who are tip toeing around their attraction towards each other. It does take some time before they come together, not too long though. And I have to say this author can write a steamy hot sex scene….DANG, good stuff.
And like I said at the beginning, the writing in this book is magic. It’s effortless and just flows so well. I’m very happy I read it and I honestly am looking forward to book 2 in the series because Brandon was one of my favorite characters in this one. I can’t wait to see that unfold and dare I say could there be a book in the works for Alex???? Fingers crossed…..
