Bridgerton meets The Goldfinch in How to Fake It in Society, a stunning queer romance by rising genre star KJ Charles.
It is 1821 and Nicolas-Marc, Comte de Valois de La Motte is making a splash in London Society. The son of Jeanne de Valois de La Motte, infamous for stealing a priceless diamond necklace meant for Marie Antoinette, Nico hopes to restore his wronged mother’s reputation, if only he can raise the funds. But he must operate with great secrecy, because the Bourbon dynasty murdered his mother, and he fears for his life.
At least, that’s what he tells Titus Pilcrow. Titus was a simple shopkeeper, making and selling artists’ paints, when he found himself suddenly married to an immensely wealthy woman who wanted to disinherit her nephew on her deathbed. As word spreads of his fortune, Titus finds himself a target of every scammer and beggar in London…including one Nicolas-Marc, Comte de Valois de La Motte.
Nico is on his last legs, out of money, and on the run from some terrifying gangsters. When Titus offers Nico a space in his household, it’s the perfect chance for him to exploit London’s newest golden purse–until he falls in love with the man he needs to cheat. Still, Nico is sure they can have a happy ending together. If he can just find his way out of his own web of lies…

REVIEW:
Masterful!! The way KJ Charles weaves a story is extraordinary. There is mystery intrigue emotion wonderful characters all set in historical England to give you a few days of an adventure of story! I enjoyed my self thoroughly
Charles has a wonderful knack of pulling you authentically into the time period without it being laborious. It’s a discovery of moments to ooh and aah over – wonderful snippets of the past beautifully woven into the romance.
I absolutely adored Titus, what a wonderful soul, gentle in the extreme and Nico, a firecracker who you cannot help but love and completely root for.
This book moves at a fairly fast clip. Things are happening and snowballing and yet we do not have all the facts, something continues to be alluded to and we don’t know what it is – but it done perfectly. Sometimes I find authors do not engage and instead belabour the mystery of the story behind the story till you are fatigued reading it. This is not that! Not at all! Too much is happening a lot of it wonderful and a lot of it concerning with a myriad of characters to judge love and hate – as you want in any story
Let me say this, it is unpredictable in that you do not really believe you know how it will sort out – it might not be unique and it’s obviously a happy ending for all the good guys neatly tied up but there is enough turbulence and more to shake you as you hold your breath when it plays out. And it doesn’t end the way you think it will – not at all… a fantastic ride right to its finale. If it was a play I would stand up and clap and come back to watch it again
Highly recommend you read this one if you’re looking for a great time.
