REVIEW:
This is the third book in the Men of White Pines series, and it’s my favourite of the lot. Disappointingly, it also appears to be the final instalment — which is a real shame, because this world and these characters feel so wonderfully lived‑in. At first glance, the book seems to centre on Cliff and his search for love on a TV show, but it’s equally the story of Mikey and Aaron, two young flatmates living in White Pines who end up appearing on the show too.
Cliff feels like the last man standing among his friends; they’re all paired up and blissfully in love. So when Flynt — the son of his friends Adam and Myles — signs him up for The Bachelor, Cliff is hesitant. Can you really find love on a TV show?
We meet an eclectic mix of contestants all vying for Cliff’s attention. There’s Brighton, a middle‑aged British supermodel; Ted and Alex, who are definitely not Cliff’s cup of tea; and Danny and Daryl, both gregarious in very different ways, but again not right for him. Then there are shy, clumsy Mikey and his flatmate Aaron. Mikey has had a crush on Cliff ever since he moved to White Pines, and Aaron , straight, loyal, and determined, is set on helping Mikey get the man he wants.
As always, the familiar supporting cast of White Pines makes an appearance. There’s simply no way they wouldn’t be involved in Cliff’s journey to finding his true love, and their presence adds warmth, humour, and that cosy small‑town charm the series is known for.
One of the things I adore about small‑town romance is the recurring characters, and this series delivers that beautifully. I love that we still get to see Adam, Flynt, Josh, Myles, Keller, Mitch, Cliff and Simone, just a handful of the regulars — and I’m genuinely disappointed the series is ending. The epilogue ties everything up nicely, though, and gives a nice glimpse of how their lives are going. I am already looking forward to seeing what Gareth Chris writes next.
