BLURB:

THEY WANT LOYALTY. I’LL GIVE THEM HELL.I know how to follow orders. It’s what got me through the Marines, and it’s what’s kept me alive working security at the Basilica casino. Keep my head down, enforce the rules, don’t ask too many questions. It’s not the future I planned after getting injured in combat, but it’s steady, and it keeps me in Antonella Rossetti’s good graces. As long as I don’t rock the boat, I’ll be fine.

Then I find my coworkers roughing up a performer from The Devil’s Dollhouse, and I make a decision I can’t take back—

I stop them.

The demon, Darby, tells me I should leave the Basilica’s gilded cage and go to work at the Dollhouse. I refuse, but when Antonella finds out about my act of mercy, she gives me a new take the job and use my position to feed her intel on what’s happening behind the Dollhouse’s doors.

Now, I’m straddling two worlds. By day, I’m Antonella’s loyal soldier. By night, I’m sinking deeper into the Dollhouse’s thrall, enamored with a demon who lures me toward a ruin I might not resist.

REVIEW:

This book picks up where the previous on left off.  Beckett is now running the Dollhouse with Darby leading the dancers.  When a client tries taking Darby to Basilica (the Angel casino where Demons are banned), he meets Mercer, a human who currently works security at Basilica. When Antonella, his boss, sees an opportunity to get the inside scoop at the Dollhouse, she encourages Mercy to take a security job there to be her eyes and ears.

Mercer has a lot of baggage. He’s an ex-marine who lost a leg serving. He also lost his family when his wife divorced him. Darby is the first demon he has actually met, but that doesn’t seem to be much of an issue for him.

Darby has a much different backstory, aside from the demon aspect. He was basically groomed by his mother for the sex trade as a youngster and while things have improved substantially in his life where he now has some actual control, that is a lot to get over. I expected a bit more animosity towards her from Darby with regards to this, but I suppose the grooming aspect held onto him a bit too much for that to happen. He is now in charge of the other Dolls which have basically become his family of brothers.

The Molly storyline in this one felt like it needed more. She was extremely important to Mercer. Everything he did was with her in mind, yet it didn’t really play out until the epilogue.

I was pleased this one didn’t take as long to get going as the first book. However, the chemistry between Darby and Mercer seemed to be a bit lacking. They just didn’t have the same spark as Beckett and Zephyr. As with the first book, I loved the connections and comradery of the Dolls and was so happy to seem them out of the previous situation. Looks like the twins are up next. They have been intriguing from the start, so I’m excited to see what’s in store for them.
