Jericho ‘Echo” Frost and Theodore Morrow are two sides of a coin. Echo is a freelancer who is recovering arcane objects. But whenever he’s on a job, Theodor Morrow shows up. He’s a field agent for one of the corps who collect and maintain the objects in question trying to keep the magical realm under wraps from the mundanes.
On a recover mission one night, things start to go horribly wrong and what is expected to be a rather easy tasks end up unleashing a Level 1 threat. UGH! Now they are both called on the carpet and ordered to set things right and find out what is causing the distortions in the magic.
There is no love lost between these two and being forced to work together is NOT on their bingo card. But needs must. And when bad things keep happening, they have to find a way to work together to figure out who or rather what is behind these disturbances. What is the motive? How can they keep the bad magic from affecting the city? Whatever they think of each other, they are going to have to work together and uncover whatever is lurking in the darkness 😉
I enjoyed this start to a new series from this author set in this magical universe. I’ve read a number of other urban fantasies from Nazri Noor and like them a lot. In an effort to be fully transparent, there isn’t much romance in this book. This is really the setup of these two characters. There is definite attraction – at least we know that from Echo since the story is told entirely from his POV, but we don’t now a lot about Morrow’s feelings since he’s a very buttoned up guy 😉 That being said, these is certainly some kind of chemistry happening here which I’m guessing will heat up in future books. These character are definitely not “friends” at the start and while not totally enemies, they are certainly competitors and there is a lot of friction between them around their work styles and how they handle things. There are opposites in so many ways. I enjoyed their push/pull, will they/won’t they vibe. The secondary characters were entertaining – friends of both guys, the big boss and then the various characters they run into and have to deal with while trying to discover what is driving this imbalance and distortion and causing such magical mayhem. I’m looking forward to the next book where I hope we got Morrow’s POV a bit and some progress with this relationship. Recommended.
