Cupid has a help desk

Alaskan pilot Quentin Hannigan is good at his job, but not so great with people. He’s the last man anyone who knows him would expect to fall in love at first sight. Until he does. Hard.

Just one problem.

Joe Kendrick, widower and frazzled dad of three, does not have the bandwidth for this. Between his kids, his trainwreck of a sister, and bills that keep piling up, the last thing he needs is a too-good-to-be-true, and admittedly very hot, pilot swooping in to play knight in shining armor.

Luckily for the star-crossed couple the world’s premier, and only, covert match-making service is on the case. Match-Made’s highly trained operatives are ready and willing to engineer a happy-ever-after, one way or another..

They just need Quentin and Joe to co-operate just once!

REVIEW:

Okay, I was not ready for what an absolute rude jerk Quentin was! Honestly, when the book started and his friends, Annette and Fred, were setting up the Match-Made cupid and describing Quention, I thought they were exaggerating. “He owns property, is close with his family, he’s got a cat, and he’s good with money. I mean, you could say he’s the total package.” Except while Fred agrees with her, he also mentions “I mean, yeah”, he said. “It’s just that inside the package is an asshole.” So obviously they were overstating it. Nope. This man is a pilot with zero social skills and zero fucks to give about anyone’s feelings. Even to Annette and Fred, he was so rude! He makes a TSA agent cry, for heaven’s sake.

It was funny to watch how many times Quentin avoided the men being thrown at him by Match-Made (covert though, so he doesn’t realize). Honestly, he is oblivious, but I think he was just waiting for the right one. Joe.

Random weird shout-out. Quentin’s Match-Made is assigned to Hunter, as his very first assignment, and he is excited about his new desk, new branded notepad, and his “…satisfactorily clicky branded pen.” Most people do not understand the joy of a truly perfect clicky pen, so Yes, Hunter!

Anyway, Quentin meets Joe, a widower with three kids who has baggage. Like, not a suitcase or even a trunk. This man has baggage that needs a U-Haul to carry. He’s stubbornly independent with (former) in-laws that are absolutely horrible. Seriously, I wanted to slap them. His late husband left a surprise debt, the youngest child has medical issues that need fixing, he is a teacher (and as one, I can say – there’s no money in it), plus the two older kids, Jessie and Benjy, are entering pre-teen and have the attitude. His sister is in rehab and he’s also trying to help pay for that. It’s a lot. You can’t help but feel bad for him.

Luckily for Quentin (before I slapped him), he meets Joe, and things click. He is nice to Joe and is happy to realize it’s only Joe that brings out his good side. Fred notices, “Good to know the special treatment is only for him.” Joe deserves good things. He is so honest with the kids, keeps his cool with Alan’s horrible parents, supports his sister, and is so self-deprecating, sure that Quentin wouldn’t want to help carry that baggage. He doesn’t let Quentin help with money issues, even though he is “…it’s a we aren’t going on holiday problem, not a darn your underwear problem” and Quentin is rich. He also has a great family, which I loved for him. And for Joe and the kids, because they love them as well.

Be aware that it takes some time for them to really be together, because while Quentin is oddly the one all in, Joe makes things difficult. I loved getting to see it happen, and while I don’t always love books with kids, I did love these kids. Such a cute, no-angst story!
