Predator. Prey. Pack.

When Teancum Leon’s ex-lover confesses to murder, Tean doesn’t believe it. Sure, Ammon has a dark side, but he’s not capable of killing someone.

Except Tean seems to be the only one who feels this way. Tean’s boyfriend, Jem, is more than willing to take Ammon’s word for it. The police are thrilled to bring the official investigation to a close. And Ammon’s wife, Lucy, is afraid of what he might have done in a fit of rage.

With the police no longer looking for answers, it’s up to Tean and Jem to find the truth. Their investigation leads them to more victims—and to the realization that a serial killer is at work, and he’s targeting gay men.

But someone else is stirring on the high steppe. Someone even more dangerous. Someone who has been content, until now, to watch. And wait.

Until Tean and Jem wake them up.

The Same Bones begins a follow-up series and should not be read as a standalone. Jem and Tean’s story starts in The Lamb and the Lion book one, The Same Breath.

REVIEW:

Note:  This is a new series with the characters from The Lamb and the Lion three book series.  It is recommended to have red those books before starting this one.

OK.  Hold onto your hats.  You’re in for a bumpy ride.

Tean and Jem are together for about a year now.  While Jem has a job selling cars (and his soul) and Tean has his job at the Division of Wildlife.  He likes his job, but he’s got a new boss. A new boss who is more interested in keeping rich ranchers happy rather than doing the job.  A job he’s wholly unqualified for.  Tean is frustrated about it.  Then he gets a call from Lucy.  Ammon’s been arrested for murder.

When Jem and Tean get to South Jordan,  the cops are still searching Ammon’s house.  Lucy is clearly upset.  It turns out that a man’s body was found – the body of the man who was having an affair with Ammon and Lucy’s 15 year old son.  So yeah, Ammon definitely had motive. But Tean doesn’t believe that Ammon did it.

Jem and Tean start poking around.  Convinced that Daniel is not the first or the only gay teenager this upstanding youth leader has groomed and gotten away with it, they start their own investigation.  And boy what they uncover.

The SBI and the police are uninterested in their theories despite finding evidence that the police apparently weren’t able to find.  Oh, and Daniel is missing.  Jem manages to save the day, but Daniel is convinced that he was right and gives them the slip.

Meanwhile things are going from bad to worse at both men’s jobs.  Also someone is trying to kill them, so they clearly are on the right track and getting too close to the killer.  This leads to some tense moments for them, but also some real communication.  Jem’s past help them figure out what is happening and why they are looking in the right direction.

This story is sooooo good!  So much tension and suspense and these characters are so real.  Told from both men’s POV, the stuff that they have been through!  I was invested from the first moment.  That Ammon and Lucy are involved in this episode?  Fated.  Honestly I think this might be my favorite couple from Gregory Ashe’s substantial backlist of unique characters.  The dialogue is so spot on.  The ghosts these two are dealing with? Epic.  Despite how heavy and dangerous the subject matter, there are also truly laugh out loud moments in this book.  I’m sure I scared a few people on my long work commute into the city with my sudden burst of laughter.  I can’t wait for the next book and more with these fascinating men.  Highly recommended.
