The Selkie’s Mate is book 2 of the Waves of Fate series. It is best read after book 1, The Selkie’s Coat.
REVIEW:
Henri’s best friend Daniel is mated to a selkie Gregory. In his role as best man, Henri has been busy planning the wedding with Vivian, Gregory’s mother. Henri has been instrumental in getting Daniel and Gregory together. Henri himself, however, has a different feeling about being involved with a Selkie due to a less than happy past. In fact Henri is a bit down in the dumps and escapes from the wedding without saying goodbye.
Winston, Gregory’s sort of adopted brother and his best man, is so happy his best friend has found his mate and his life’s path is now set. But when he hears Henri, the other best man, he realizes that the beautiful French restauranteur is his mate. He’s nervous though because he can tell that there is something going on with Henri that is causing him pain. He realizes he will have to go slow with Henri and not scare him away.
Winston tries to take care of Henri’s feelings, but his selkie is unhappy that he is not pursuing Henri with all vigor. Henri withdraws as Winston tries to pursue a relationship with him. He’s held off on confirming that they are mates because Henri is clearly not ready to hear it. Little does Winston know that Henri’s past is so painful, he’s not sure he can ever be in another relationship 🙁 It’s going to take some work and understanding and honesty for them to work on the obstacles to them being together.
Oh, this was such a good story. I felt so terrible for Henri and all he’d been through. Having it tied more to Winston and Gregory did not help. I won’t spoil it but Henri has a lot to deal with and there are other factors and dangers that they will need to face together. Winston loves Henri so much and he wants so badly to take care of Henri and help him heal. There is sadness and loss to deal with here and the grief at times feels overwhelming. Luckily Winston realizes that Henri is worth whatever effort it will take for them to be together. Henri has to come to the decision on his own that maybe just maybe he is brave enough to try to love. I loved how Daniel and Gregory support their friends too 🙂 Recommended.
