For better or for worse, every person makes a difference.
Achilles Spanos has had enough of the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs. After being mauled by a bear shifter and barely surviving, convinced that nothing he does makes a difference, Achilles is ready to hand in his badge and gun. But with no clue about what to do with the rest of his life, he agrees to take on one more assignment: speaking with a mysterious man who can make wishes come true.
Due to a cadre of corrupt powerful men, the world grows bleaker by the day, and the Bureau chief hopes that the wish-granter, Dee Martell, can help tip the balance back toward good. The opposing forces, however, are doing everything in their power to have him tip the balance in their favor instead.
The problem is, even Dee doesn’t understand his talent—or have any conviction what he wants to do with it. After living his life as a loner, Dee is now caught up in a deadly tug-of-war… with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
Thrown together against their will, Achilles and Dee face impossible odds. But they learn they also have powerful allies. As they struggle to distinguish monsters from heroes, they discover that hope is a mighty weapon and that even the smallest effort matters.
REVIEW:
NOTE: This is Book 13 in this series. I wouldn’t say this should be read as a standalone. There are significant spoilers though for previous books – especially the last one. I recommend reading the other books – mostly because they are really well written and also because the characters from other books are mentioned throughout this one.
Wow! I’ve been very sad that these series is coming to a conclusion this year, but Kim Fielding has finished this long running and favorite series in spectacular fashion. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn’t this.
Achilles Spano is an agent who is done. He wants to retire. Of course he’s bored within weeks. His life was not a bed of roses when he was recruited and as a human agent, he’s done his best. But being mauled by a bear shifter was his last straw.
Grimes needs to bring in a person of interest from Portland. He sends a retired agent, but Dee Martell, the target, doesn’t seem interested. Too bad. Because when Spano does agree to come back to the Bureau and goes to contact Martell, he’s gone. No trace. But he’s got a phone and he’s getting traced. So Spano goes after him. But what he finds is nothing that he expects. And he pays for that mistake.
When he and Dee are reunited, well Dee is not about to watch the guy suffer. But that decision draws even more attention. And things are going from bad to worse and Dee and Achilles are going to need a lot of help. Dee knows he’s not “normal”, but he’s about to find out that he is far from the only one. And Achilles is determined that they are both going to survive this.
I loved loved loved this story. And boy is it timely. There are forces at play here that are just moving the chess pieces around the board – largely because they can. Hmmmm. Kinda of like real life these days. I am not going to spoil the plot of this final tome. But I will say I was thrilled to get to visit characters from previous stories in this series. And there are some questions that finally get answered. Sort of 😉 These books have all been very good, but this final volume really ties up a lot of things for readers who have long been passionate about this world. Brava! Well done. Highly recommended.
