REVIEW:

Note:  This is the fifth in the series and it is required to read this series in order.

This book I think is the key to understanding and watching Cael’s development as a healer.  Without magic, he has to learn to heal using alchemy.  With Quin being captured by the Iskelar king, Cael needs to win the Medicus contest without magic in order to secure his freedom.  Needless to say, chances are not great that he will achieve this quest.  As with previous books, Cael does his best with everything he’s got to try to win the contest.  The challenges he faces are steep and the odds are not in his favor.  His relationship to Quin continues to grow but there is so much fear and hope and love comingled, that it’s quite roller coaster ride.

This chapter also revealed much of the backstory of Quin’s family and why his uncle is such a bitter and devious and power hungry man.  While the tragedies that both Quin’s uncle and father endured were terrible, the pain meted out to the next generation and beyond are inexcusable.  At least there is a new understanding what drove the quest for revenge.

Quin and Cael’s love story continues to be bittersweet.  At every turn,  their love and loyalty and are shown through their actions. Not for the first time, Cael is faced with an impossible choice and it’s a doozy.  As usual, the choice he has to make will mean someone loses something.  🙁

Well Book 5 is pretty pivotal to this story.  There is a lot going on here and Cael and Quin are constantly in the crosshairs.  Despite Cael’s best attempts, once again he cannot save everyone.  I have to say I really hope that he is rewarded in the next book.  These characters have suffered enough.  Talk about a saga!  I ‘m looking forward to seeing how things get resolved and hopefully these two characters will get some well deserved rest from all of this!
