Life on Mars by Patricia Logan
FBI Files, Book 4
Things aren’t always what they seem.
Special agent, Max Prince, and his boyfriend, Dr. Leo Reeves, are back to work after their first case together. When a prominent Department of Defense scientist kills himself in a mysterious way, their entire FBI team is tasked to figure out if the weapon he was working on was somehow the cause of his death. Things get even more interesting when SAC Lincoln Snow calls in old friends to help. Damon Thorne, formerly of the CIA, and Jarrett and Thayne from the ATF step up help on the premise that their case might have a link to biological terrorism.
It’s so much worse.
Seventy years ago, the CIA began an illegal human experimentation program, code named MKUltra, and the more Leo and Max learn about what Dr. Cummings has been doing for the DOD, the closer they draw parallels to the defunct program. These experiments aren’t the only things the government scientist has been working on. When Jarrett and Thayne go exploring at his house, they discover a secret room which promises to reveal the true nature of what’s happening…and it’s worse than they could’ve imagined.
Evil always targets the most vulnerable.
Just when they think they’ve figured out what’s going on, an old nemesis from the FBI steps in with instructions to shut it all down and take over. All Max knows is, the sudden appearance of a guy their whole team hates, can’t be good, especially when he starts throwing his weight around. Something else is going on here and a cover up is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. To top it all off, an embarrassing ex, an accidental poisoning, multiple break ins, and a couple of bad guys acting like ninjas, add to the utter chaos of this case which promises to be stranger than life on Mars. After all—
Truth is stranger than fiction.

As Leo’s thoughts drifted, a burst of laughter shook him out of his meandering musings. He looked up from the label he’d been examining on his microbrew and caught Thayne bent double in laugher, as Jarrett chuckled, looking down at him.
“What the hell, Jarrett?” Thayne howled, turning toward him and Max as he straightened. He marched over to them, holding tongs for turning the burgers he’d just taken off the barbeque in one hand. Jarrett followed, carrying a plate of burgers, looking sheepish as he set them down on the table they’d already laid out with potato salad and a pan of macaroni and cheese. Thayne stopped in front of them and turned to his husband, still laughing. “While we eat, you can tell them.”
“What?” Jarrett asked, tongue in cheek.
Thayne waved the tongs before walking over to the table and motioning for them to join them. “Tell them how you can determine whether a homeless person is gonna be around to talk to a second time if needs be, since they’re transient by their very nature. Tell them your brilliant theory. Have a seat and dig in, guys,” Thayne said.
Leo and Max pulled out chairs and sat down in front of the veritable feast Thayne and Jarrett had whipped up in less than forty-five minutes. Everything looked amazing. Leo reached for the pan of mac and cheese and scooped some onto his own plate, handing it to Max as Jarrett passed him the burgers.
“Really? Fine, I’ll tell them,” Jarrett said, frowning at his husband. When he glanced across the table to face them, a tiny smile was playing around his full lips and his eyes were twinkling. “Homelessness is by its very nature, a dangerous way to live, right?”
“Right,” Max replied.
“So, I was just tellin’ Thayne how I can guess whether a homeless person is gonna be around to interview a second time if we need to,” Jarrett said.
“Yeah, Thayne just said that,” Max said, waving his hand at his fellow Marine. “So, are you gonna share how you suss out their longevity, Evans?”
Jarrett crossed his arms over his wide chest as he smirked. “I use the tooth to tattoo ratio.”
Leo started laughing as Max snorted beside him.
Thayne shook his head, grinning as he pointed to the platter Leo held. “Those are the veggie burgers, those are top sirloin, and I grilled some fish to make those.” He pointed out the various burgers on the plate.
“Jeez, this all looks delicious, Thayne. Thanks,” Leo said.
“What’s the tooth to tattoo ratio, Jarrett?” Max prompted again.
“Go on. You’re so proud of yourself,” Thayne said.
Jarrett grabbed a massive double-decker cheeseburger and bit into it, chewing as his eyes twinkled. Leo watched in fascination as he swallowed, still resting his elbows on the table and holding up the burger as he grinned at them. “It’s not a theory, Thayne. It’s a proven fact. ER doctors have established that if you can count more tattoos than teeth, very little can kill that guy.”
