Author Monthly Post – Anne Barwell – Writing in Series

I love writing series. Most of my characters aren’t content with one book, and any ideas tend to grow into series and beyond. With more than one story, characters get the opportunity to grow and spread their wings. I can also check in on them further on, and often from someone else’s perspective.

World building also lends itself well to series as I can explore more of it, and build depth. I love seeing that from other points of view too. Some of my series follow couples right through, while others have different MCs as a focus in each book

I’ve also written series that are finite, so I know how many books I’m writing before I start. Those usually have an arc that continues across the series although each book has a HFN so leaves the MCs in a good place. I usually have that arc plotted out before I start, but the fun part is the journey along the way as details for that can change as I write.

Other series are ongoing so those books stand alone a little more, although things that have happened in previous books do impact the current one, much as the past effects present day in real life. Those tend to have different MCs in each book, although characters from earlier books might get a later one either bookends for the series, or because there are still unresolved threads that need writing. I sometimes will have different arcs within a series too so an arc being resolved and a bad guy finally being taken out doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the MCs.

This month I’m taking part in a series promotion. If you’re looking for a new series to binge, check it out
