The view was worth the slight discomfort, Jon thought as he stared out over the ocean at the vibrant colors of the sunset.
I’m a long way from Trenton.
Jon’s parents died in a car wreck when he was young, and since he didn’t have family who wanted to take him in, he shuttled between foster care homes. Grief turned into anger, and he had relished getting in fights to take out his feelings.
His principal must have seen something in Jon no one else did, because he sent him to a boxing club instead of juvie. Carlos and Paul who ran the gym had been movie stuntmen before injuries sidelined them. Carlos did the training, and the much quieter Paul ran the office and kept the books.
Much later, Jon realized that Carlos and Paul were more than friends or business partners, and it gave him hope that maybe someday, he could find love and settle down.
Jon thrived under Carlos’s tutoring. His natural athleticism let him learn moves quickly. One day, Carlos asked an old friend to watch Jon spar, and that friend offered Jon his first stunt role. When the movie with Jon’s debut premiered in Cape May, he had invited his mentors to the party and bought them a nice dinner.
Jon pushed the memories away, glad that he retained them but not wanting to be pulled into the inevitable melancholy that came from thinking too hard about the past. Instead, he focused on the ever-changing sunset and the sound of the ocean.
He didn’t hear the stranger approach, which was odd. Even when the man was almost close enough to touch, Jon didn’t sense danger.
The man stood much taller than Jon’s five-foot ten-inch height. He was a big guy, all football shoulders and muscles that filled out his clothing nicely. The stranger had black hair, dark eyes and the start of a beard. Jon indulged himself and let his gaze sweep over the man. I’m invisible to him. What can it hurt?
“Hi.”
Jon didn’t bother responding since almost no one was ever able to hear him anyhow.
“You’ve got a great seat to take in the view.”
That got Jon’s attention. He straightened, tensing, and his eyes widened as they locked on the newcomer and a tangle of emotions rose in his chest.
You can see me? Jon asked aloud.
The stranger froze, clearly reacting to Jon’s voice.
Panicked at the unfamiliar turn of events, Jon vanished.
“It’s okay,” the other man said, looking at the spot where Jon had just been sitting. “I’m not going to hurt you. I can see and talk to ghosts, but I’m not an investigator. I won’t let people bother you. If you’d like to talk, I’d like to listen.”
