BLURB:
Police officer Finnigan Pettaprin’s life is his job. He’s driven to be the best, always. Past relationships have largely been heartbreaking, so he keeps to himself. The last thing he expects is for a near-disastrous car chase through town to bring him in contact with Mark, the one who got away.
Mark Wallace hasn’t had the best luck in life. He managed to get out of Chicago with his freedom and his son, Lonnie, and needs help. Finn is the one friend he knows he can count on for a temporary place to stay, and possibly more. He’s hoping for a new start in a new town with a new job, but with his parents threatening to try to take his son, nothing is easy.
Finn takes Mark in and helps him get his life back on track. Along the way, the two men grow closer as they realize that what they both have always wanted is now in reach. But the intersection of Mark’s past and a string of local robberies threatens to upend the small family they are just starting to build and could give Mark’s parents the ammunition they need to destroy everything.
REVIEW:
Mark is doing his very best to get his life together so he can take care of his son Lonnie. Things have been pretty rough going and he needs some help. Mark goes to the man he’s always been able to count on…his old friend Finn.
Finn has been in love with Mark since he could remember, even after Mark broke his heart. He will do everything he can to help Mark and Lonnie, including taking on Mark’s past that may be catching up with him.
This is a sweet story with likable characters. Lonnie is adorable and I love every scene that he’s in. I’ll be honest and say it’s not my favorite Andrew Grey story. It’s too short to support the duel “evil” that is making Mark’s life miserable so both of them just end up being kind of “meh’. I think investing in one of the plotlines would have made for a far better story.
However, if sweetness and low angst is your thing, you will love it. The chemistry between the characters is awesome and Finn’s work partner is funny. I would have liked to have seen more of her.
Mr. Grey knows how to get readers invested in his characters and these guys are no different. I just would have liked the story to slow down a little and let thing come to more of a simmer before wrapping it up with the requisite “happily-ever-after”.
I’m a big fan of this author and I know that not every story is going to be to every readers taste. I’ve been told I’m a bit of a story snob, but I like what I like…and love what I love. This was pretty good, it just didn’t blow me away.
It was a good way to spend a rainy afternoon and as always, I’ll be looking forward to what Andrew Grey comes up with next.
