REVIEW:
I am so thankful that I jumped at this book.
When two of Dobb’s fraternity brothers take their revenge prank against their rival frat house a little too far the Dean takes things in his hands for the last time! Either the two rival houses learn to work together or they are both closed permanently! Now Dobbs, team captain of the SMT Quiz Bowl team, must somehow mold Jesse, running back star of the football team, into a level one Quiz Bowl member! Dobbs is well aware of how fine Jesse looks…hell he has a secret crush on his looks but Jesse is a true ALA A-hoe! But what he didn’t realize was that Jesse was super smart…and gay like him!
Neither men, or this book for that matter, where what I was thinking it would be like. I guess I was imagining Anthony Edwards and Revenge of the Nerds. I was pleasantly surprised at how well thought out and thorough it was written. I will admit that my eyes may have glazed over a bit from the Quiz Bowl questions and I might have skimmed them after awhile. But the character development was spot on. The fact that Dobbs wasn’t portrayed as a wimpy, be-speckled nerd but a bright man and could give Jesse a run was great. Having Jesse give it right back intellectually wise was perfect.
I think the thing that grabbed hold of me and sold me was the twins and Jesse’s obvious commitment to them and his family. And then Dobbs stole my heart when he was able to get both boys to interact with him. As the grandmother of two non-verbal autistic siblings (2 & 4) I know firsthand the day-to-day struggles that Jesse and his parents face. One seemingly insignificant action can result in a day from hell! The authors got this spot-on. Dobbs coming in and fitting in so well was great. But his ability to interact and get the boys to respond in a positive manner was fascinating and the icing on the cake to make me (and I believe Jesse) fall for him! I had already fallen for Jesse the moment he got the call from his Mom and that was his only priority…family first.
I will admit that it took me a bit to really get into this book. The rivalry between the two frat house was immature and that was an initial turn-off. But the chemistry and bond between Dobbs and Jesse, once they finally got past all that silliness, was what sold me. It was like I was watching two men, who were mature for their ages, finally grow up and accept that life wasn’t a predestined package but that the bumps in the road might shift you off that course but put you on the right one. A big thumbs up for me!
