Angelo shares an exclusive excerpt of his story “Jake’s Heart for Christmas” and brought a wonderful giveaway!
Welcome Angelo 🙂
After facing some trouble back home, Declan was more than eager to spend Christmas with his online best friend, Jake, in his hometown of Winterwood. It was everything he’d hoped it would be. The town was friendly, Jake was a ray of sunshine, and the spirit of Christmas was in every corner. What he didn’t expect was the growing connection between him and Jake. The more time Declan spent with Jake, the more the line between friendship and something more started to blur. Maybe the trip to Winterwood was exactly what Declan needed to find himself again. Now, all he wanted for Christmas was to win over Jake’s heart.
“Please say something,” I begged.
“How?” Jake asked.
“How what?”
“How can you be into me? Last I checked, you’re straight.”
I snorted at that. “Yeah, I thought I was too. Can you still be straight and be into a guy? Remember, I’m new to all this.”
“Are you messing with me?” Jake asked, narrowing his eyes at me.
Did he really think I would joke about something like this?
I shook my head. “No, Jake. I’m being serious here.”
“Okay, then help me out here. Because I’m so lost.” Jake stood up from his spot on the couch, and began pacing. His hand ran along his mess of curls, making them stick out in all sorts of places. It was cute.
I stood up as well. “Look, I know this sounds crazy. Lord knows that’s how it sounded to me at first. I was just as confused as you were.”
Jake stopped moving and faced me. “And now you’re not?”
“Not entirely. I still don’t exactly know how or when it happened, and at first, I thought I was confusing these feelings I have for you with something else. I was scared to tell you, then find out I was wrong. But Jake, I’m not wrong. I may not know how it happened, or when I started having feelings for you, but I do feel it.”
“How do you know that?” Jake asked, crossing his arms. “I’m not trying to doubt you, Declan, but you have to admit this is some off the wall shit. I’ve known you for a year, and all that time, I thought you were straight. You had a girlfriend, for fuck’s sake. One who cheated on you not too long ago. Now, here you are telling me that you have feelings for me. You said it yourself that you were worried about telling me because you thought you were reading into your feelings wrong. So, are you sure you’re still not?”
“I’m not,” I said confidently.
“Then please, explain it to me.”
So, this would be the part where I put everything on the line. Where I’d tell Jake how I felt about him and hope for a miracle. I took a deep breath, centering myself, and spoke from the heart.
“I’ve never been good with peopling. You, of all people, know that. I never had a serious relationship, not even with Katie. I liked her, but I don’t think I was ever into her that way. When we got together, I felt as if it was expected of me. That I had to be her boyfriend because she said we already were. I never connected with her, or anybody else, Jake. That is, until I started talking to you. Jake, I’ve never been more happy to see my Skype buzzing with an incoming video call, my phone buzzing with a text message, or ringing for a call, than when I receive all those things from you. You make me feel alive. I smile more when I talk to you. You’ve always been in my head. The way you laugh when you think I’m funny, even though I wasn’t trying to be. Your stories about all the cute animals you took care of that day at work. The way you seem to love life. The way your face glows when you have that big bright smile on your face. The icing on the cake was how amazing your lips tasted when you kissed me. That was what helped me realize I have strong feelings for you, Jake Mathison. Because I didn’t want that kiss to end, and I was hoping there would be more of them in the future.”
Jake’s eyes began to water with unshed tears. Feeling the urge to do it, I reached up to cup his face, using my thumbs to wipe them away before they dripped down his cheeks. He looked as vulnerable as I felt. Those beautiful blue eyes looked at me as if seeing me for the first time all over again.
“I like you, Jake. I really, really, like you.” I whispered.
