Boston Favorites
In Craft Brew (Trouble Brewing #2), Nic and Cam, who are usually based in San Francisco, travel to Cam’s hometown of Boston to deal with a family emergency, which leads to them racing to solve the cold case that’s haunted Cam’s family for decades. While I grew up in North Carolina and now live in the Bay Area, Boston is a town I’ve visited often and enjoy very much. Boston, like any city, has its own rhythm, quirks, food and sports teams, and I loved setting a story there, though I am far from the first person to do so. Here are my top three Boston-based stories, from book, film and television.
- The Way Home Series, by May Archer – I binge read this three-book series over my summer vacation, and I adored them. While each book focuses on a different couple, the six main characters become a tight-knit group of friends and the overarching mystery that drives the series also drives each couple’s story. And the romance and tension are sizzling. While the story and characters do travel out of Boston from time to time—our heroes either running from or chasing down the bad guys—when they are in Boston, you get the feel of it (especially the weather, and as someone who always seems to be there in August, the baking humidity) and the ties each main character (and author) has to it.
- The Town (2010) – This is one of my all-time favorite crime/thriller movies. I know, you’re so surprised? A movie with LOTS of car chases, loved by the author who put two in Craft Brew (Jamie was feeling neglected, what can I say?). But as exciting as all that action was, the movie was a virtual tour of Boston as well, through many of its different neighborhoods, be it as we visited with characters or were on one of the aforementioned car chases, and culminating in an awesome action sequence featuring Fenway.
- Fringe (FOX 2008-2013) – Yes, there are a lot more famous TV shows set in Boston, but as a lawyer, I’m generally allergic to legal TV shows (Suits, notwithstanding because there’s eye candy and high fashion galore), and Cheers always gets the loves. Granted, Fringe wasn’t actually filmed in Boston (aside from some exterior and location shots), but I thought it still managed to capture the feel of Boston, from its weather, to Harvard, to some of the town’s colonial neighborhoods, and many of its quirks. And on top of that, it was a damn good science fiction show with twisty, sharp plotting and top-notch acting.
Those are just my favorites? What are yours? What book, television show or movie do you turn to when you want to experience Boston from the comfort of your own couch?
He waited for Cam to finish wiping off, then took the rag and tossed it aside. He stretched an arm over him, planting it in the mattress on the other side of his hip, icy blues staring down at him. “I’m not running.”
“You tell me your rental is getting demo’d and you’re getting kicked out, which thank fuck because that place should have been torn down ages ago.” Aside from its proximity to the brewery Nic co-owned, the run-down duplex made no sense for Dominic Price, federal prosecutor and son of a real estate mogul. “Seeing as you’ve been here every night for four months, I made the logical suggestion that you move in.” He flung an arm toward the door. “And then you bolted like the sheets were on fire.”
“I’m leaving for San Diego.”
Shock propelled Cam up to seated again. “You’re what?”
Nic leaned back just in time to avoid a head-on collision. He folded his arms, lean muscles taut as they bisected the myriad of tattoos painting his torso. “The US Attorney down there is taking paternity leave. They need someone to cover.”
“And you volunteered?”
“No, they asked me.”
Cam scooted back against the headboard, letting it hold him up as his world spun faster than he was equipped to handle at this hour.
It was a great opportunity for San Francisco’s best Assistant US Attorney—getting out from under his asshole boss here and taking the reins of an entire operation there. Major problem for Cam, who after a year in the Bay Area had only recently begun to feel at home, in no small part due to the man beside him.
Anger and hurt bested professional goodwill. “Bullshit you’re not running.”
Nic inched closer, laying a hand on his thigh. “You’ll be safer if I’m not here.”
“This is about your father,” Cam surmised.
