Servants of the Living ForestTITLE: Servants of the Living Forest

AUTHOR: Brandon L. Summers

PUBLISHER: Less Than Three Press

LENGTH: 39 pages

RELEASE DATE: September 14, 2015

BLURB:

Cameron and Jocelyn have been together for eight months, and when Jocelyn suggests a camping trip as their first big outing together Cameron can’t bring herself to say no. Camping isn’t her first choice, but there’s nothing she likes more than seeing Jocelyn happy—and the time alone together isn’t bad either.
When they arrive, all seems better than they could have hoped. The locals are friendly, the area is beautiful, the only odd bits are old blood stains on the floor of the cabin and the strange mark that seems to pop up everywhere, and that’s easily ignored in favor of their romantic escape…

REVIEW:

Being a lover of lesbian fiction and the great outdoors, the blurb to this story reeled me in. At the same time, I worried the plot might freak me out and play tricks on my mind next time I go camping.

The girls set off on their camping adventure, not only do they get lost on the way to their destination but then later on when they go for a hike through the woods. The hut they arrive at is filthy and infested with bugs. They quickly clean the place up, and then Cammy or was it Jo, flops down on the bed and entices her lover. The hours of sex that follow are off-page, something I might normally cry about but not in this story. There are numerous references to the girls ‘making-out’ all of which I found creepy not sexy. The comment on the beach about one of the girls having always looked young but in her bathing suit she looked illegal turned me off any mention of sex.

As per the title the girls discover the Forest is a living thing, the events that unfold were weird more than horrific to me. I don’t know if that was due to the fact I expected more or because of how detached I felt from the story.

The downside of accepting a book to review is being committed to writing a review despite whether I enjoyed the plot or not. They say there’s an audience for every book. Just because this one didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t for others. So, give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.
