TITLE: My Roommate’s a Jock? Well Crap!
AUTHOR: Wade Kelly
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 262 Pages
BLURB:
It’s easy to become cynical when life never goes your way. Cole Reid has been a social recluse since he was fifteen, when he was outed by his high school baseball team. Since then, his obsessive-compulsive behavior and sarcastic nature have driven away most of the population, and everyone else hates him because he’s gay. As he sees it, he’s bound to repulse any prospective friends, let alone boyfriends, so why bother? By the time Cole enters college, he’s become an anal-retentive loner—but it’s not a problem until his roommate graduates and the housing department assigns Ellis Montgomery to move in with Cole. Ellis is messy, gorgeous, straight, and worst of all, a jock! During a school year filled with frat buddies, camping expeditions, and meddling parents, Cole and Ellis develop a friendship that turns Cole’s glass-half-empty outlook on its head. There must be more to Ellis than a fun-loving jock—and maybe Cole’s reawakening libido has rekindled his hope for more than camaraderie.
REVIEW:
This book has been on my “want to read” list for ages, but somehow I just never got around to it. I’m happy to say that I finally did and I am so glad! I really, really, enjoyed this book and I particularly liked the author’s writing style on this one. I’ve read a couple of her other books that had a far more serious subject matter, but this book by comparison was a light hearted romp. I loved both her characters and story line development.
When we meet Cole Reid, he is living alone in a two bedroom apartment which is part of school housing. His roommate, Jonathan, graduated that spring and Cole hasn’t been quick to mention it to Stan in housing because he is afraid of who or what he might get for a roommate. Cole is a totally anal retentive/obsessive-compulsive freak (I personally recognize the type, sharing many of those same habits!) He is totally against the thought of ending up with a jock as a roommate, which we learn is all because of an unfortunate erection that occurred in a high school gym locker room. That one hard-on got him voted off the school baseball team and alienated him from everyone for the rest of high school. When he fails to find a roommate by August 15th, Stan has to assign one. The only thing Cole asks it that it PLEASE not be a jock.
Enter Ellis Montgomery. When he comes to the door, Cole’s brain shuts off the moment he looks into the most beautiful blue eyes he has ever seen in his life. Then reality crashes in. Within minutes the apartment is full of soccer players bouncing a ball around, totally messing up Cole’s quiet calm OCD apartment! When Cole calls Stan to find out why he gave him Ellis, Stan denies he knew he was a jock, although Cole can tell he is lying.
Thus begins a semester of loosely interpreted “fun”. A man who wears t-shirts with sayings like “What is the speed of dark?” paired up with one of the school’s soccer team’s best players. Chaos ensues! But somehow the two become friends and even Ellis’ other friends start to grow on Cole. Along the way we have camping with Christians, a sport’s injury, a needy mother, severe homophobia and a hate crime.
Will all end well? No spoilers. Get the book and see. I loved this book and I’m highly recommending it. Great job Ms. Kelly.
