BLURB:

One family road trip. Two rival stepbrothers. So many secrets.

My stepbrother Jonah, with his dimpled smile and aw-shucks attitude, is honest to a fault. I’m the opposite. I use makeup and fashion as a shield and lie every chance I get.

Our mutual loathing is the only thing we agree on.

When our bickering ruins our sister’s fourth birthday, our parents plan a Pride-themed road trip with forced bonding time, room sharing, and wait…there’s only one bed? I’d rather shovel manure in my Louboutin espadrilles than be stuck with Jonah for ten days. But I can’t refuse.

San Diego Pridefest is our last stop and my ticket out of Nebraska.

When everything goes sideways, Jonah and I must work together to salvage this family vacation.
Jonah in protection-mode has me yearning for more, and in a moment of weakness, we share our secrets over a bottle of rum. Being with Jonah is nothing like I expect and everything I want.

Can we hide our relationship from our family? And what happens when we get to California?
Jonah hates liars, but the truth is one luxury I can’t afford.

One Wrong Step is an MM romance featuring feuding stepbrothers, hate at first sight, just one bed, light D/s, so many secrets, and wait—Vivian can sing?

REVIEW:

Vivian is a hair stylist in a small town in Nebraska.  He is a lot of this town that he was forced to go to when his father sent him to live with his mother while he was in high school.  Being a gay teenager in a farming community was no picnic for the transplanted New Yorker.  It doesn’t help that his stepbrother Jonah is the HS Quarterback and they absolutely do not get along.  They do have a 4 year old sister in common that they both love and the each love their respective parents – Vivian’s mother Carolynda and Jonah’s father George.  But they fight like cats and dogs.

Vivian dreams of going to California and becoming a makeup artist.   His bestie Frankie is in San Diego and wants him to come out for a Pridefest competition, but he doesn’t have the money.  When he asks for help, well he gets shut down by both parents.

Jonah has no desire to take over his father’s farm.  He’s in college and working for an event/wedding planner in another small town while avoidng his family.  He can’t bring himself to disappoint his father who assumes he will just come home after college and assume his role on the farm.

Neither have been honest about this with their parents and that is weighing heavily upon them.  And they they manage to ruin their 4-year old sister’s party fighting.  At this point, the parents do the unexpected and propose a road trip to the Grand Canyon and San Diego.  Jonah tries to get out of it, but the parents and Jonah’s boss think it’s a good idea 😉

The road trip starts and the family is doing ok – despite the boys still fighting.  They are worried about Carolynda who seems to be unwell.  When push comes to shove though, these two can work together and after some unexpected fame and consequences, the road trip is a real turning point for these two.  Seems that there is a fine line between hate and love and these two have a lot more in common than they ever knew 😉

This was such a cute story.  If you’re a fan of this author, you were introduced to these two characters in the Christmas story of her Wedding Disasters series.  That story is hilarious and highly recommended also 😉  Vivian and Jonah have nothing in common on the surface – other than their parents being married to each other and their 4 year old sister.  But looks can be deceiving.  As their trip goes along and Jonah and Vivian spend time together, they discover they are actually compatible in very unexpected ways 😉  There is a of humor and heart in this story and these two learn a lot along the way.  It’s a sweet and spicy story with wonderful supporting characters who help these two get out of their own way and figure out that they are actually better together than apart 🙂  Definitely recommended.  I can’t wait to see what comes next in this fun world D.K. Sutton has created.
