A kingdom thrives on diplomacy and secrets.
Pasil Greenleaves, Captain of the Royal Guard, has spent his life sworn to blade and oath, a man forged in steel, silence, and duty. Loyal to a fault, eager to serve, and unshakably composed, he’s tasked with protecting a dignitary after the arrival of a powerful delegation from the Black Sand Isles, a distant, magic-steeped realm that left the tight control of Melowynn and its religious theocracy eons ago.
Welcomed warmly to Celear, the seat of the mainland elves, is Teryn Nouradi, a high-ranking diplomat and mage in the Sandrayan high court: brilliant, beautiful, and utterly impossible. Where Pasil is all sharp lines and responsibility, Teryn is blinding winds and shadow, wielding ancient magic with a flick of his fingers and a smile that hides centuries of political discretion and etiquette.
Their meeting is anything but smooth. Teryn’s presence is a disruption. A mystery wrapped in silk and heat—and he knows it. But when a dark force begins unraveling the fragile peace between their lands, both men are forced into an uneasy alliance. As political games twist into threats of war, Pasil finds himself pulled into a dangerous mission with the foreign envoy who sees past his armor.
The Bronze Warrior is the first book in a sweeping M/M romantasy age gap trilogy featuring a diligent guard, a gifted foreign ambassador, magical intrigue, forbidden desire, a race to save two innocent lives, and a love that could burn kingdoms down—or save them.
REVIEW:
Note: This series is tied to a previous duology, The Crowns of Melowynn. While not required, this book contains spoilers for those books and also really sets the stage with the world and the royals in this story.
Pasil is the Captain of the Royal Guard. While born into a poor family, he has worked hard and raised his station in life. He is loyal and strong and committed to doing his duty. There are tasks at hand though.
When a new negotiation is set to take place, Pasil is assigned to guard Teryn Nouradi. A diplomat from thee Sandrayan court, Pasil is attracted, but this is not something that he can act on. Teryn has other ideas 😉 Despite his reluctance, Pasil cannot resist Teryn.
As they set off on a mission to save innocent lives, the journey becomes quite rocky. Poor Pasil is horribly ill and cannot travel by boat. Danger follows them as the travel by land though and their task will not be easily completed. If they can save the innocents and return home, what will become of them? Can they be together?
Much like the previous series, this world-building is fabulous. I so enjoyed the many different characters here. As seems to be the case with romantaxy stories, there is a lot of intrigue and betrayal and negotiation. Pasil and Teryn’s task is not going to be easy and their journey leads them down dangerous paths. Again in this book there are parallels to timeless problems in societies such as exploitation of the weak and class divides. Both men are determined to succeed in their endeavor and figure out what the future holds for them. While hard won, Pasil and Teryn do get their HEA. However, things are not all nicely wrapped up with a pretty bow and I can’t wait for the next book to continue this saga. V.L. Locey proves here once again that she really can write in any genre. Fabulous characters, plot, and world-building that keep us coming back for more. Recommended.
