But the past is a trap. And while Cael is lost in Quin’s memories, the war still looms.
Reality drags him back. To Ragnarson. To a battlefield where Quin stands before him, not as a ghost of the past, but flesh and blood. Real and untouchable. Their reunion burns brief and bright before duty rips them apart once more.
As the kingdom teeters on collapse, rebellion ignites. The war isn’t just for a throne anymore—it’s for survival. And when Cael is captured, Quin will stop at nothing to bring him back.
Because kings do not beg.
This healer does not bow.
And masks cannot hide the truth forever.

REVIEW:
Note: This is the sixth in the series and it is required to read this series in order.
Whew! Well we’ve reached the end of this epic hero’s journey. There was so much pain and drama and sacrifice in this series, it’s almost inconceivable that the suffering is over! I’m not sure I’ve read a series that tortured the characters for so long as this one. Every time it looked like there might be a break in the clouds, nope. Something else happened to keep our heroes apart. Cael (and through him, the reader) now sees back through Quin’s memories of their interactions over time. Being young, he never realized exactly quite how impulsive he was and just how much that affected Quin (and others). Although it’s been building throughout these series just how long these two have know each other and in how many guises, it was satisfying to finally figure out the beginning of Book 1 – which I clearly stated was not my favorite as I felt I was dropped into the middle of a movie and had missed a lot of the plot!
Both Quin and Cael have sacrificed so much in this series. In their desire to always do the right thing and in Cael’s case, save everyone, mistakes have been made and losses still happened. Quin is a bit more pragmatic knowing that it’s not always possible to save everyone, but Cael is determined to try. Still the underlying purpose for both men is to do their best to help the most. And certainly in the last book, there are many opportunities for them to do that. Cael comes to realize that the truth behind his ability to be a great healer never depended solely on his magic. His understanding of his relationship(s) and his strong bond with Quin take a bit of time for him to fully appreciate as well. There are still loads of obstacles to overcome, but in the end they get there!
Quin’s desire to reclaim his kingdom and rebuild is admirable. He certainly deserved the chance to be the King he desired to be, but with so much drama and intrigue and even dealing with his brother made it difficult at every turn. Between the plague, the constant battles with warring nations and being separated from friends and family, plenty of opportunities for angst and drama abound!
I’ll be honest in saying that at times I struggled with this series. Some books seems to put Cael and Quin through misery for sake of misery. I couldn’t see how they story was better for all of these episodes of suffering and sacrifice only for them to reunite and then go through it again. I will say that Cael’s maturity was a key component in this series – he started off completely reactionary and impulsive. It cost lives. It cost him a lot and it cost Quin. By the end of the series, he’s accepted that about himself and has learned. What a long and torturous slowest of the slow burn series ever! It’s a lot, but the happy ending is certainly deserved after all they’ve been through.
