I am Mackenzie Country born and bred. Farming the high country runs in my blood, like my father, and his father, and my great grandfather before him. My future has been mapped out for me since the day I was born. Or at least it was, until Liam Skelton walks onto Lane Station, lights a fire in my heart, and turns my whole world upside down.
Bossy, tatted, and out and proud, Liam is everything my father abhors.
And I want him.
Badly.
But having a chance with Liam means risking everything. My family. My future. And my life in these mountains that I love.
Still, the heart wants what it wants, and mine wants Liam.
With so many things against us, maybe we don’t have a chance.
Maybe we’ll crash and burn.
Or maybe we’ll find a way to have it all.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the third book in this series and as such contains spoilers for the previous two books. That being said, this book works as a standalone.
Julian Lane is doing his best to keep his family’s station going. His father has suffered a severe stroke and cannot run things. Jules has taken over -much to the chagrin of his father. His brother Zach has left the family business after his father’s homophobic rejection when Zach comes out. Of course the best revenge is living well and Zach is doing just that.
Jules still need to make things work and run the business and he’s doing everything he can to help his father recover. He’s got an occupational therapist coming to provide intensive therapy to see if Paddy can get back more of his mobility and speech. That therapist, Liam, shows up with tattoos and a rainbow bracelet. Paddy is not happy. Jules is thrilled. He’s bisexual but has never met anybody that he’s willing to do anything about it with given his father’s reaction to Zach.
Soon Liam and Jules are flirting and then more. Paddy begrudgingly acknowledges that Liam is helping him regain function, but he’s still not thrilled about it. Liam’s got some family drama to deal with and of course Liam and Jules are keeping things on the DL. Some folks figure things out though 😉 But you know it’s only a matter of time before someone drops the bomb on Paddy. To say that the consequences are bad is an understatement.
So this is a long story about being true to yourself. The Lane boys weren’t too lucky with their father. It’s a good thing he pulls his head out of his a$$ before it’s too late, but not without a LOT of drama and trauma. I enjoyed the characters from the previous book providing support here and Norma, the boys mother showing up for them. Too bad people do still act this way. What a lot of wasted energy. Well written and very emotional.
I have to say that listening to any Gary Furlong performance is always a real pleasure. This book is another example why. The character voices, the emotions, the powerful delivery of a difficult story and family relationships are just really peak talent. The accents, the distinct personalities and all of the decisions around the action in this story – whether they are tender emotional scenes of intimacy or the ire of a family breaking apart because of the inability to face reality and accept who people are – are just fabulous. Honestly I cannot think of another narrator who could do a better job with this. Bravo Mr. Furlong in bringing this rather difficult story to life. This author/narrator combination is literal perfection. Highly recommended.
