Author Flip Devin has arrived in New Orleans with no suitcase, no inspiration to continue his newest novel, and no hope. Then he begins getting dreamtime visits from Scratch, a handsome musician who was murdered a hundred years ago. According to the fortuneteller across the street, Flip has the gift of Seeing.
Soon after, Flip meets Tony Bergeron, a charming local historian… who looks remarkably like Scratch. Both Tony and Scratch have stories to tell, and New Orleans has magic to share. But with the suitcase still in airline limbo, Flip realizes he’ll need to get rid of his baggage to make room for something new.
REVIEW:
Well she’s done it again. Another fantastic story from Kim Fielding. This was so engaging and such a delightful tale of a writer moving on with just a suitcase to a new place in order to finish a book on deadline and finding so much more than he ever expected. First I love the name Flip. For lots of reasons. Flip in this book is a talented writer who has had a bit of a block, broken up with his boyfriend and taken a furnished apartment lease for 3 months thinking the change of scenery will do him good. The fact that he chose New Orleans is significant. When the airlines loses his luggage and promises for days that it’s “on it’s way” is saga many frequent travelers can relate to 🙂 In this case, the promise is somewhat hollow because Flip can tell where his suitcase travels because of the AirTags 😉 Ah, 1st world problems. Surprisingly though, Flip makes the best of it and attempts to get to know his new neighborhood.
He meets a woman on the street, Miss Amelie, who is a seer. But most intriguing is the visitor who comes to him in his dreams. Scratch is a ghost who was also a musician who was murdered 🙁 He hasn’t moved on and he keep showing up in Flip’s dreams. They talk at Scratch tells him about his life and why he was murdered and even plays the piano for him. Much to the chagrin of Flip’s neighbors. What???
Flip is a bit thrown by this. He then meets a young man – a historian – at a local house that conducts tours of the mansion and the other buildings on the property. The young man is a descendant of the property owners and surprisingly related to Scratch! They hit is off and agree to go out on another Tour with Tony showing Flip more of the city and neighborhoods. Flip is convinced that he is not relationship material though and although they both have a great time, well Flip sort of calls things off.
If you want to know what happens with Flip and Tony and Scratch and Miss Amelie, you’ll need to read the book. Which I highly recommend. New Orleans is full of fascinating places, people, food, history, etc. I loved the whole ghost story aspect of this book. Flip realizing that he CAN change and embrace a future that is different than his past is beautifully written. The details of the history of the city, the houses, the music and how intertwined they all are is just a pleasure to watch unfold in this story. I would love to see a story of these two in the future. What a beautiful romance set in one of the most interesting and gorgeous places in the world. Highly recommended.
