“Why are the police chasing you, Adam?”
“I killed a man,” I told him after the briefest of pauses. Felt good to tell him. Felt good to say it out loud. My belly unknotted, if only by a hair.
“You killed seventeen men,” he replied.
I shook my head. “I killed the eighteenth after those. And here. In the United States, I mean. And why are the police chasing you?”
With his free hand, he reached inside the backpack. When the hand reemerged, it was clenched around a thick stack of bills. I peeked inside the backpack, and all I saw was green. The forest around us quaked in apparent envy.
“I hijacked a plane,” he said.
I was still peeking. “Uh huh.”
“This should be two-hundred thousand in ransom money,” he said.
I was still peeking. “Uh huh.”
“Did the man you kill deserve to die?”
I stopped peeking and stared back his way. “Uh huh, boyfriend. Truly, a very bad man.”
He shoved the money back inside. “God, that sounds nice to hear.”
I nodded. Indeed, it did. And then my hand went up and unlatched the hook above my head. I then pushed the wood slats until we were staring up into a sky full of stars. “I take it back,” I said. “Romantic.” Not to mention, lucky. Because it was now very dark outside, and so even more difficult to spot us should they come looking. Which you had to think they certainly would. Only, it didn’t seem like they were. Maybe they figured we’d already gone, skedaddled before they had arrived, leaving our stuff behind. Only saving grace was that we had our wallets on us, our IDs. Oh, and each other. Oh, and a ton of cash. Like a serious ton.
He maneuvered himself and stood up, then climbed out of the tunnel with me close behind, the backpack flung to the ground before landing with a dull thud. We were deep in the woods, but you could still make out the house in the not-too-distant distance, still see the beams from the flashlights as they crisscrossed, could even hear their voices carried on the wind.
All that is to say, we were safe but with a scarily placed ish at the end.
“Now what?” he asked in a whisper.
I shrugged. “They either drive away or come looking for us out here. Betting on the latter.”
“So, no plan then?”
My shrug had remained put. “I built the tunnel.”
He grinned. I could just barely make out the white of his teeth. “And?”
I poked him in the arm. “Your turn.”
He reached for the backpack, slung it over his shoulder. “The raft,” he whispered. “Can you find it?”
“Shouldn’t be too difficult, but then what?” I replied. “It’s dark. It’s cold. We’re not dressed for a ride down the Columbia, least not this time of year. And down leads to out, I should remind you.”
“Shelter,” he said. “Temporarily. Because the house is now out of the question. Even if they leave, doesn’t mean they’re not watching it.”
“But for who?” I asked. “Me or you? And which one of us is the bigger catch?”
He laughed. “You aiming for a trophy here, Adam? Who’s the better criminal?” He reached down and held my hand. “Because for sure it’s me. I hijacked a commercial airplane full of people and escaped with two-hundred thousand dollars.”
I pointed at the house. “So those could be the F.B.I.”
“Maybe,” he said. “Or maybe not. If that old man called anyone, it’d have been the local police. We should hope for that. Though the Feds will be here soon enough if it’s me those guys are looking for.” He squeezed my hand. “Come on. Let’s get to the raft. I’m already freezing out here.”
“Um,” I ummed, “so you don’t, you know, mind that I killed someone?”
“With good reason.”
My shrug returned. “Okay, but…”
To which he replied, “You don’t mind that I hijacked a plane?”
I laughed as quietly as possible. “Kind of sexy, if you ask me.”
“Figures,” he said with a sigh.
