Book Description
Are second chances possible when the first chance never really happened?
Vince Rhodes has loved Cody Burrows for years, but he’s never been bold enough to ask him out. This wallflower is ready to make a move, so he enlists the help of James, the resident stylist at Dye Hard Style and unofficial matchmaker, to hook him up with his crush. Vince is betting it all on Cody giving him a chance, but will he?
Cody Burrows has admired Vince since they were both in high school. While he was the solid athlete unable to come out, Vince showed his rainbow proudly. Now they’re both older and wiser…and matched up by James. Will Cody allow himself to be free with Vince and find his heart’s delight or will he keep the barriers around his heart forever?
Maybe falling for Vince is just what Cody needs…
Vince relaxed just a bit as he swayed with Cody. When he looked into Cody’s eyes, he couldn’t deny the attraction. He’d always liked this man, but touching him now, he never wanted to stop. The music didn’t matter and neither did the people around them. All he saw was Cody. He brushed his mouth over Cody’s and damn near whooped when Cody didn’t push him away. The kiss hadn’t been deep, but it seared into his mind.
“Excuse me.” A blond man who appeared to be chiseled from marble cut into the dance.
Vince tried to look smooth and unaffected by the intrusion, but seeing Cody with someone else did sting. Cody was sexy and wore those jeans too well. It was no wonder he’d attract attention.
Cody shimmied around the man and returned. He brushed his mouth across Vince’s ear. “That was rude.”
“Yeah.” He chuckled, more out of nerves than joy. He rested his free hand on Cody’s hip and allowed himself to relax again. He liked dancing with Cody. They had a certain rhythm together.
Another man, this one a muscle-bound guy with short black hair and a thin mustache, tapped Cody on the shoulder. When Cody turned, the man ground on him.
Jesus. Was everyone there to pick Cody up? This time, Vince eased his free arm around Cody from behind. He might not be the best-looking man there, but he’d been sent to the club on a date with Cody and he wasn’t about to let this guy break them up.
Not yet.
Cody disengaged from the bulky man and faced Vince again. “Want to go somewhere else?”
“Where?” He breathed in the scent of Cody and liked the feel of Cody pressed to his body.
“The patio.” Cody eased his arm around Vince, keeping him chest to chest. “It’s less crowded.”
“Sure.” He left the throng of dancers and ventured to the patio with Cody. The cooler air refreshed him and the quieter setting helped him relax. This was more his speed.
Cody kept him close and resumed dancing. “This is better.”
“It is.” The twinkling lights overhead and the softer music gave a much more intimate feel to the situation. He draped his arm around Cody’s shoulders and kept hold of his bottle. He slid his free hand over Cody’s cheek to his exposed throat. He’d never touched Cody this way and couldn’t imagine not ever doing it before.
Cody flashed a brilliant smile and tucked his hands into Vince’s back pockets. “I like this better. I can hear you.”
“And no one’s cutting in.”
“True.” Cody’s grin widened. “How’s the writing coming?”
“Good. I turned in my edits for a second round on one book and finished another for a first round of edits,” he said. “How’s it going at the gym?”
“I knew you’d be successful with your writing,” Cody said. “Just had a feeling.”
He wasn’t exactly successful. He got by and kept busy, but he wasn’t going to be buying a mansion any time soon. Then again, he hadn’t been sure Cody remembered he was a writer. He knew down to his core what Cody did for a living. “Are you still getting shit at the gym?”
“Me?” Cody’s eyes widened.
“They treat you like you’re not all that bright.” He hated the way Cody’s boss acted like Cody was just another worker instead of a brilliant trainer.
“No.” Cody shook his head. “It’s okay.”
He didn’t know Cody well, but he knew when the man lied. “Right.”
“They do, but I ignore them.” Cody shrugged. “Are you still working out?”
“I walk when I’m stuck.” Which happened too often. “I go to the community center to swim, too.”
“Come back to the gym. I’ll work with you.”
“I can’t afford it.” Not at the moment. He needed to write more to make more money and pay the bills he had. Butt in seat got words on page, which supplied the readers with words which helped keep him financially afloat.
Two men approached. “Cody! We didn’t know you’d be here tonight.”
Cody loosened his grasp on Vince. “Derek, Todd.” He shook hands with them. “I thought you guys were at the body builder competition.”
“Not tonight.” Todd stood between Vince and Cody. “It starts on Sunday.”
Vince nodded, then tapped Cody on the forearm. “I should probably get going.” He wasn’t a club guy.
Cody gestured to his friends. “Be right back.” He lowered his voice and spoke to Vince. “Am I that awful?”
“No.” He quite liked their time together, but he didn’t belong in Cody’s group of friends.
“Then why go?”
“I’ve had a good night, but it’s time to put the glass slipper away before it breaks,” Vince said. “You’re with your friends and that’s cool, but I don’t fit in. I had a good time, though. Thank you.”
“You don’t have to go.” Cody held on to the hem of Vince’s shirt. “Want to go out again?”
“I’d like that.” It wasn’t a lie.
“You’ve got my number. Text me.”
“Or you could text me.” He hated the way Cody’s friends looked at him, like he wasn’t good enough to be part of their circle.
“I wish you weren’t going, but I understand,” Cody murmured against Vince’s ear. “They’re pushy guys. Nice, but pushy, and I won’t be able to get rid of them. Call me? Please?”
“I will.” He kissed Cody’s cheek, relishing the tingle against his lips. “Good night.” He nodded to Cody’s friends, then left the patio and wound through the club again. Once outside and at his car, he sighed. He’d left while winning. He’d scored a date with his crush and had a fun, but short night. Nothing lasted forever, but he’d had a victory.
Not too shabby.
