Officer, Brian Cordero, didn’t expect his life to be flipped upside down the day Raphael Ledeo sped past his patrol car in an Aston Martin. It was supposed to be a routine patrol stop, but the moment their fingers touched, his fate was sealed. He’d been chosen as Raphael’s mate unbeknownst to him. Now human no longer after he and Raphael bond, Brian has to figure out how to navigate life as a powerful demon. And that’s just the beginning of his troubles. He discovers that there are eight gates to hell, and one of them–the worst one–is open, and a secret demon-hunting organization needs his help to close it. If that wasn’t enough on his plate, his attraction to Raphael grows more intense the longer he tries to deny it. Brian considers himself straight, after all, and Raphael has been the only man he’s been with. But can he deny his desires any longer or will he have to finally admit his feelings for Raphael?
Reader Advisory: This book is filled with sarcastic demons, devilish charm, enough steam to fog up all of the windows in your home or car. And a plot that will keep you engaged until you finish the last page. 18 and older. Content may be sensitive to some readers. Discretion is advised.
REVIEW:
Anyone who’s ever read a Nicholas Bella story is aware of his ability to create dark and gritty worlds. If you haven’t read a Nicholas Bella story, please be forewarned – this book and series is not for the faint of heart. The content of this book is extremely intense and could be triggering to someone who’s not familiar with the non-con that permeates throughout the book. What does non-con mean? Non-con as defined by Urban Dictionary is “Short for “nonconsensual” in fanfiction, regular fiction, or just in general referring to various kinds of relationship scenarios where one or both of the participants is forced into sex. Generally associated with rape fantasy and highly controversial.”
Ok, now that I’ve gotten the gritty details out of the way, let me tell you why you should still pick this book up and read it. This author creates worlds out of thin air. A world that presents itself as “normal”. When in reality the underbelly of this world, is ruled by a Summoning Demon King. He’s created a hierarchy of Demons, including a tiered level within each type of Demon. He has created an unprecedented level of detail about the different types of demon characters that appear in this series. Our main characters in this first book in the series are Raphael and Brian. Brian is a police officer and Raphael is an Agoto Demon. You may ask what is an Agoto Demon? Well, that type of demon is a soul eater. There are a multitude of demons that are part of this story and the series. The Demon realm is fighting for it’s very existence in this series,
The characters in the story are well defined and described in vibrant, gritty detail. As I’ve mentioned Brian is a cop and Raphael is a demon. As Brian comes to terms with his not so straight joining with Raphael and becoming an Agoto Demon himself, he also becomes a part of a bigger fighting force. This force is tasked with keeping the gates between worlds closed and keeping the worlds inhabitants safe.
Both main characters in this book have their own internal struggles to deal with. Brian struggles with not only his sexuality, but also his newly acquired demon side. Raphael has been a demon for a very long time and has flown under the radar of his King. With the gates on the verge of being opened, he will need to come to terms with the attention he is now garnering from King Adriel, as well as bringing Brian into the demon fold.
One of the other things I love about Nicholas’s books is his ability to maintain a multi book story arc. This series must be read from book 1 thru book 3 and beyond. These stories do end in a cliffhanger, so be forewarned once you start this series you will not be able to put it down and will crave more and more of this series.
I highly recommend this story and I look forward to the continuation of this series.
