Author Monthly Post – Anne Barwell – Opposites Attract

This month I’m taking part in an Opposites Attract promotion.

I love this trope, and enjoy exploring the friendship, relationship, and romance between two men who on the surface are often nothing alike. Sometimes, they are opposites in personality, and other times in background and life experience. One’s weakness is the other’s strength and they complement each other to become stronger together than apart.

Shades of Sepia, books 1 of The Sleepless City series I wrote with Elizabeth Noble, features two very different men.

Simon is a vampire who was turned after the Battle of the Somme during WWI and although his friends have embraced technology, he still isn’t comfortable with it. He’s lived in the States for many years, but has never lost his British accent and comes across as the Edwardian gentlemen he was raised to be.

Ben, his human soulmate, is a Kiwi on his OE (overseas experience). He’s working in a café in Boggslake, a small town in Ohio that his grandfather visited back in the 1950s.

While Simon can be quite reticent in showing his feelings, Ben has no qualms in saying what he thinks. He’s also a keen photographer, which is bittersweet as he can’t photograph the man he loves, as vampires don’t show up on film.

These two work well together, and since meeting, Simon has relaxed more, and been dragged into the 21st century, although he still prefers to avoid it if he can. Ben is no longer restless, and unable to settle as he’s found what, or rather who, was missing in his life. He’s also introduced Simon to the world of graphic novels, though Simon smiles, shakes his head, and doesn’t quite get the appeal.

When I’m finished my current WIP, I’m looking forward to starting the 2nd draft of Double Exposure, which is the next adventure for these two. Ben and Simon are heading to New Zealand to meet the in-laws…
