Monthly Guest Post—Andy Gallo—Audio and eBooks

Better to Believe was released in audio two weeks ago and it got me reflecting on how I view audio books. Before I had some of my eBooks made into audio books, I was not a fan of audio. No reason, I just didn’t see the appeal. That has since changed.

I remember the moment it happened. It was listening to Nick J. Russo breathe new life into my characters. For those reading this who are not authors, you might not know that by the time the book is ready for release, a lot of authors are over that book. They’ve lived it intimately for so long, we tired of re-reading the book we wrote, over and over.

I got the proofs back to Better Be Sure, and I heard my story in a new way. There’s was a new life in the characters that was created by the voice actor. They felt different to me, even though they were my words and my actions he was reading.

Interestingly, when I started to listen to books by other authors, if I didn’t like the voice of a particular character, it was harder for me to connect with them. That never happened when I read the eBook. The voices in my head when I read are how I want them, and I always like them. But I can’t say the same for when I listen. It hasn’t happened much, but a few times so far.

I’m curious to hear what others think. Love audio? Meh on them? Like them, but still love your eBooks/paperbacks?  Let me know in the comments.

I’ll end with a chance for those reading this post to win an audio book or five. I’m having two giveaways in connection with the release of Better to Believe.

Andy Gallo:

Andy prefers mountains over the beach, coffee over tea, and regardless if you shake it or stir it, he isn’t drinking a martini. He remembers his “good old days” as filled with mullets, disco music, too-short shorts, and too-high socks. Thanks to good shredders and a lack of social media, there is no proof he ever descended into any of those evils.

Andy does not write about personal experiences and no living or deceased ex-boyfriends appear on the pages of his stories. He might subconsciously infuse his characters with some of their less noble qualities, but that is entirely coincidental even if their names are the same.

Married and living his own happy every after, Andy helps others find their happy endings in the pages of his stories. He and his husband of more than twenty years spend their days raising their daughter and rubbing elbows with other parents. Embracing his status as the gay dad, Andy sometimes has to remind others that one does want a hint of color even when chasing after their child.
