I just reached an interesting point in my writing cycle. I have a slew of books all set to go—all I have to do with those is wait for release dates and then celebrate. I have two more books currently in the editing stages. That means intense bursts of work interspersed with pauses as my editors do their magic. And I have no looming deadlines. So I can start a new project, and I can choose whatever I want to write.
Ah, but there’s the rub.
Imagine that you’re hungry and you’re ushered in to a room filled with long tables. On those tables are all of your favorite foods, including some you haven’t had in years. Every one of them looks tempting and delicious… but you can choose only one.
Now, that doesn’t mean you’ll never get to eat the other foods. But you certainly won’t get to them during this particular buffet, and it’ll be months before you’ll see them again.
So what do you pick? Ooh, over there is that scrumptious space opera. But look on that table! There’s the deliciously dark fantasy. Yum! But over there is the sweet and frothy contemporary. And over there….
It’s tough when you love them all equally. You could opt for the one you’ve been craving for the longest, or maybe the newest one instead. You could choose the really popular one everyone loves, or the really quirky one that delights mostly you. The one that perfectly suits your mood or the one that’s most different from anything you’ve recently eaten. The small snack that means you’ll be ready soon for another dish or the enormous platter that will keep you full for a very long time.
I realize I’m in an enviable position. Plenty of people walk into this room desperate for a meal and find the tables empty. And I know when I’ve finished this meal, I’ll get to revisit the laden tables again.
But still, it’s really hard to pick!
So that’s where I am now. I’ll probably sit for a few days, letting my last book fully digest, before moving on to the next. Hmm. Maybe I’ll do some baking in the meantime.

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.
After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her family and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.
