With war, comes sacrifice….
Ryneq and Nykin return home to find the lowland armies camped along Torsere’s borders. Seran wants the dragons, and with a new witch in his ranks, war is inevitable.
With the elves at his side, Ryneq fights to keep Seran and his soldiers at bay. But they’re not prepared for the witch using old dark magic. As Nykin and the dragon riders battle a deadly attack, an unexpected betrayal forces Ryneq to make a difficult decision.
Faced with the prospect of losing his kingdom, Ryneq gambles on a plan that could ultimately save Torsere, if only they can stay alive long enough to see it through.
REVIEW:
This last book was a doozy. I was biting my lips, my nails, and whatever, so nervous at what was going to happen in this. There were so many directions this could have gone and I was really surprised at how it ended.
Ryneq and Nykin couldn’t even really enjoy their joining. As soon as it was over, they were whisked away to Cerylea’s wedding. And there is where things go wrong. A dark witch is there along with the missing king, trying to crack the protection and start things. But what no one expected, was the witch was just a distraction. There was another with Seran and they were about to take over Torsere. They worked many plans, some flying home quickly on the dragons, but it seemed no matter what happened, they were going to be ready. Especially when they find out how the witch is staying so strong. And Ryneq has to make a decision he never thought he’d have to. Some are going to have to retreat. But even with that, the witch has made threats about them coming back or things will get much worse. And after what Ryneq just saw, it’s already at its worst. And Ryneq hopes there’s a plan that’s coming, because if not, they’re all going down.
This was a hard, hard one to read. You never quite knew what was going to help, even with the elves. There’s another traitor in the mix, witches popping up, using magic they shouldn’t have been. It’s just one bad thing after another. And for Nykin, all he wants is to protect Ryneq, but Ryneq has other ideas and it’s leaving them fighting and tense. I was actually scared for a minute things might be pretty much over, but then we can’t have that for an HEA 😉 . The point is, it’s been horrid in ways you could never imagine for Torsere. And all are doing their best to be the best at their duties. To save the King, to save their home. But sometimes it’s too overwhelming and surrender or retreat may have to be the option. But no one wants that. And I felt my heart break at what some of these were feeling. How hurt, or angry. How painful this was. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Sacrifices were made, as in any war, and it’s leaving things for the rest as a loss of hope for everyone else.
It’s such a great book. And a great series. I really recommend it. You might need tissues at some points. It’s a very emotional story. I’m glad in the end of what happened, but it was one heck of a journey to get where they had to be.
