Emmett sighed and his body began to relax into the shared touch. Jax’s throat tightened as he looked down at his best friend, snuggled up against him. It’s now or never. He hesitated, and instead of freeing Emmett from his grasp entirely, he drew back just enough to look directly into Emmett’s eyes. They were damp and red-rimmed and Emmett’s gaze flickered to Jax’s mouth before bouncing back to meet Jax’s eyes. A muscle twitched in Emmett’s jaw. Okay. Yeah, you can do this. Jax swallowed hard, closed his eyes, and pressed his lips to Emmett’s. Emmett’s breath hitched in his throat, but he leaned forward to meet the gentle touch and slid his palm to the base of Jax’s neck. The press of Emmett’s mouth was tentative, just a bit hesitant. Take it slow. Something in Jax’s chest tightened at the press of Emmett’s hand against his neck and he parted his lips to slide his tongue into Emmett’s mouth. Emmett opened for him and Jax’s heart sped up, thudding against his ribcage. He focused on the wet slide of their tongues and the careful curl of Emmett’s fingertips along the back of his neck. Jax focused on the sound of their breathing to drown out the noises of the wind outside. Heat began to rush to his groin and he was grateful that the towel he was still wearing was wrapped around him enough to cover everything. Before Jax had the opportunity to consider what he wanted to do next, a terrible crash sounded outside, startling them both, and something hit the ground hard enough to make the floor tremble just a bit. They parted abruptly, both snapping their gazes to the direction the noise had come from. There were a few residual crackles, but nothing loud enough to be of concern, and Jax looked back to Emmett. Emmett’s hand had flown to his bare chest, palm pressed to his heart, the same hand that had been on Jax’s neck just moments before. He looked at the door for a few more seconds before blinking and shaking his head, then looking back to Jax. “Shit.” Emmett dropped his hand to his thigh and shook his head. “Shit.” Jax reached out for Emmett’s hand, but Emmett pulled away and stumbled to his feet. “Em–” he started, but Emmett retreated with a few shaky steps. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have–I mean we–I can’t do this.” Emmett turned and fled. There was a slam that Jax heard loud and clear over the noise of the storm.
