Monthly Guest Post—Andrew Q. Gordon—True Heroes

First, I hope all who see this are healthy. Please take this serious, and do all you can to keep yourselves safe.

I tried to write something upbeat and positive, but every time I finished it felt hollow. There are a lot of people who hurting, and I don’t want to minimize that with some light, fluffy post. But I also don’t want to doom and gloom everyone either. So a balance.

I’ve told people before, I work in law enforcement. I’m a prosecutor. I was at the grocery store yesterday and saw police officers getting food. I thanked them for being on the job. Just because they are police officers doesn’t mean they are immune from the virus or even unconcerned. I’m sure they are as worried as we all are.

My cousin is a nurse on Long Island. I wrote to check in on her and thank her for her work. Medical people knew they’d be around sick people when they entered the profession, but I doubt any of them expected to be involved in something like this. They too are scared, but still showing up.

I spoke to Monique at the grocery store. She’s been helping us since ‘lil q was still sitting in the kid’s seat on the shopping cart. She told me how scared she is, but she has to work. People need to eat.  No one who applied to work in a grocery store could ever imagine they’d be called upon like this to be heroes.

The list goes on.

My point is, even in these dark times, good people step up. They’ll never be famous or household names, but they are the truest heroes we will ever meet. They are risking their lives for ours. Every one of them.

So if you go out for food, or for a walk and chance upon one of these heroes, take the time to thank them (from a safe distance of course). Because of them, those of us who can, are staying home with our families. Because of them, we still have essential services. Because of them, we’re that much safer and secure in our homes.

As I said. They true heroes.

Be safe and be well.

~Enjoy the journey.

Andrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting with technology, he now takes his MacBook somewhere quiet when he wants to write.

Since devouring The Lord of the Rings as a preteen, he has been a fan of all things fantastical. His imagination has helped him create works of high fantasy, paranormal thrills and touch of the futuristic. He also writes the occasional contemporary story.

He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his husband of twenty-four years. Together they are raising their daughter and three dogs. Andrew tries to squeeze writing time in around his most important jobs, being husband and ‘Papa.’ Along with teaching how to kick a soccer ball or ride a scooter, he has become fluent in cartoon characters and children’s books.
