Elijah Everett knows he should feel good about the progress he’s made over the last four years, ever since he ran away from a terrible situation at age sixteen. With the support of his loving, adopted family, he recently graduated from college and has a good job and an exciting new life waiting for him on Catalina Island. But his past has left him with little confidence and a list of fears a mile long, and Elijah wonders if he’ll ever fully heal.
Cassidy Juric doesn’t talk about his past. He doesn’t talk about much at all, actually. And yet, Elijah thinks he recognizes a kindred spirit in the gorgeous young ranch hand. The two are undeniably drawn to each other, and a tentative relationship starts to develop. But when the devastating truth about Cassidy’s past is revealed, Elijah wonders if asking Cassidy to trust him might be asking the impossible.
Can two broken men learn to open their hearts and take a chance on love? Or will the ghosts of their past prevent them from building a future together?
REVIEW:
Okay, I’m going to start by saying I love this woman and everything she writes. Does that make me non-objective? I don’t think so. I just know talent when I see it. I was so lucky to get to see Ms. Land at GRL this weekend. She is a special person and her characters seem to come alive every time I read one of her stories.
Now for those of you who have read her books, this one will be a little different. She has bridged over to the Catalina Island locale she created for her last book and this is the start of a new related series. Some of our old favorites are around… but there wasn’t enough of Nana in my humble opinion, so hopefully that will be rectified in future installments!
But I digress. Let’s talk about this current story. If you’ve read her books, you will remember Elijah and how he lives with his ex, Colt, and Colt’s family. Elijah and Colt aren’t together, but Elijah is almost a second son, or actually… almost might be an understatement. He is definitely one of the family. When Elijah accepts a job at the ranch on Catalina Island and decides to move there, everyone is sad, but it is a good thing for Elijah.
Enter the mysterious Cassidy. Cassidy has some serious backstory going on, which we don’t learn about until later in the book, but let me tell you when we learn the shocking details of his past, it really explains why he is such a loner and so hesitant to trust anyone. No spoilers there.
I loved getting to know more about Elijah and getting to know Cassidy. And there may even be a story coming for Colt. Things are lining up for him as well.
I can’t possibly recommend this book any higher than I already do. If you aren’t reading Ms. Land’s books, you really need to start.
