Not because he isn’t in love—he can’t stomach the thought of putting Cam in danger.
Kidnap and rescue expert Cameron Byrne is determined to figure out what trouble Nic is running from, but devastating news from home brings him back to Boston and to the cold case that has haunted his family for two decades. Shoving aside his pride, he calls Nic for help.
Together they search for answers, navigating the minefield of Cam’s past. But when they get too close to the truth, Cam must use every skill in his arsenal to save the man he loves…before it’s too late.
REVIEW:
Well, this book picks up a couple of months after Imperial Stout and all is quiet on the Vaughn front…so…you know that Nic isn’t all that comfortable. He’s been in caretaker mode for years and it’s affecting his relationship with Cam…as Cam is wanting Nic to move in with him and Bird…I really just love that name for that fat cat. But Nic believes that the closer he gets to Cam and his friend, the more danger he brings them. Nic runs to San Diego and this separation starts to wear on them both…the need to be with each other But, even that takes a somewhat back seat to what’s happening in Boston.
Cam gets a call from home that his momma is in the hospital and things aren’t looking good. Cam needs to get home and fast!! Things start to get going when Cam gets there and his momma asks him to find out about his sister, Erin…the only daughter in their family. Her disappearance 20 years earlier has never been solved and the family buried an empty casket 18 years ago. Cam’s momma asks him to look into Erin’s disappearance and find out once and for all…what happened that day when she disappeared. Cam had tried to work the case and came to dead ends left and right…but his momma started working the case and that helps put him in on a course that gives some clues and helps him start to find answers. To finally have the answers and the closure that not only Cam, but the entire family needs. The clues takes him to see that there is a pattern and a new girl has been taken and it’s a race against the clock to save her. We get to see why Cam went into Kidnap & Rescue and how this made him into the man he is now.
Nic only spends a couple of days in San Fran before Cam calls and he goes to Boston to help his lover. Nic is trying to figure out what to do in regards to Vaughn and how to keep the people that he loves safe. We even got to see more into Nic’s past and the GS in his tattoo on his back. I loved getting into who Nic is as a character. Being thrust into Cam’s family and the issues that have arisen in Boston. Nic comes to the conclusion, that FINALLY, he has a family and people that he loves and love him.
Now, this book will tug at your heartstrings…learning about Cam’s past and his family…it just breaks your heart. Nic, finally seeing what a family dynamic is like and coming to the realization that he has a family now…yeah…it’s sweet and yet, hard to watch this strong man finally see that he is loved. That he’s worth it. The mystery aspect with the missing girls and the disappearance of his sister…yeah…I was really on the edge of my seat to see if they would solve the crime and find his sister alive or dead.
This book had so many different things happening and I couldn’t get enough. I had to see how Cam and Nic’s relationship would progress….GREAT and also to see how they would solve the missing girl and Erin’s disappearance. To see Cam with his family and to see the dynamics of that family and when Cam finally comes out to his family…their reaction.
This book was very well written and the pace flowed along so smoothly that I couldn’t put it down once I started. I had to finish the book. I even went so far as to go to my room so that I wouldn’t have any outside distractions….Nothing was going to get in the way of me finishing this book. To get to know more about Cam and who he is and why he is the way he is…yeah…good stuff. Imperial Stout was more about Nic and his issues with his father as well as his father’s shady dealings. This story is about Cam and it was so good. I can’t wait until the final book in the trilogy. I want to see how Leyla brings this all together.
