Joe Chase and Ned Bowden are damaged men. They each bear scars from surviving the world they were born in. Deep scars, both physical and emotional.
When fate offers its first kind act by bringing the two together, suddenly their scars don’t seem so bad, and their lives don’t feel so empty.
Yet that kindness comes at a price.
Just as Joe and Ned begin to experience true happiness for the very first time, the world turns on them again.
But this time it turns on everyone.
REVIEW:
Most of you who have ever read a review from me on a John Inman book know that he is one of my favorite writers, and an instant ‘me, me, me’ with my hand in the air when it hits a list for reviews at Love Bytes. This new book is no exception. I loved it. It is very different, in an apocalyptic sort of way, but I couldn’t put it down. What would you do if you woke up one morning, and the entire world had changed overnight and things you had always taken for granted were missing, or unavailable? Would you survive? Or on the flip side, what would you do if no one could see you and know what you did?
As Nightfall starts out, we meet Joe Chase and his neighbor Ned Bowden. Both men are damaged and have faced a lot of adversity over the years. We don’t learn right away what exactly their backgrounds are, but as the story proceeds, all is revealed. I enjoyed learning about them in snippets, and I came to like both MCs and was really pulling for them in their adversity. The two men have been friends practically since the day they moved in next door to each other, and both have feelings for the other, but both are afraid to scare off the other if they express their feelings. Neither is even sure if the other is gay. It takes the end of the world, or near enough, for them to confess to each other.
Now let’s talk about the end of the world. A huge solar flare event plunges San Diego and the rest of the world into darkness… bringing out the darkness that lives inside many human beings. On the run trying to avoid hostile or even deadly human contact, Joe and Ned will battle wild packs of dogs and the encroaching darkness. Somewhere in the dark, the two men learn more about each other and draw closer. But can they, or life on Earth, survive what is happening to them? And what about those folks out there in the dark who have let their inner darkness win and let their worst out when no one can see them?
No more spoilers. I really enjoyed this one. If you like disaster type stories, I think you’ll like this one. It is set on a global or even solar system scale but narrowed down to the budding romance between two broken men in San Diego who are just trying to survive. I think you’ll enjoy the read.
I highly recommend it!
